Homeier, ot Fort Wayne. F,d. Kolter was a business caller In Decatur Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Heller, of Portland, spent Monday evening visiting Mr. and Mrs. Orval Heller and family. Floyd Grandstaff who has been visiting his parents Dr. and Mrs. J. (’. Grandstaff, for a few days returned to Indianapolis, Tuesday. Mrs. John Kirchner and daughters called on Mrs. Arden Arnold and twins Tuesday afternoon. Doris Johnson, of Peterson, spent Tuesday evening visiting Jaunita Sullivan. Milton Hoffman. Dorothy and Oscar Hoffman and Mrs. F. Shackley motored to Fort Wayne Wednesday morning, where they visited Mr. and Mrs. Milo Hilyard. Mary Furhman, who has been a patient at the Adams County Memorial Hospital has been removed to her home, and is recovering nicely. Mrs. Charles Sullivan and daughter Dowena, and Miss Fay Shimp were business callers in Decatur Wednesday afternoon. The I.adigs Aid Society of the Beulah Chapel church met at the home of Mrs. J. C. Grandstaff, Wednesday, all dav. At noon, a delicious pot-luck dinner was served. Those present were, Mrs. Gust Yake. CHICAGO FACES NEW GANG WAR Police Close All Gambling Houses In Effort To Prevent Bloody Battle 'Chicago, Nov. 10.—(FP) —Chicago today aparently was on the verge of a new gang war which gave prospect of being as fierce and bloody as the battle of the beer barons In years gone by. Desertion of the "beer racket" by gangsters who saw llklihood of bigger profits from gambling houses caused the new flare of enmity between rival cliques. Police made a desperate effort to prevent the war by closing all gamlil- j ing enterprises, but though most of tlie establishments locked their doors in response to word from headquarters that the racket was off. it was believed they would be opened again a few days. The cause of the war threat was | entirely economic. The beer business has been falling off for months,. partially because of excessive competition and partly liecause retailers . learned the secret of mixing a barrel of “real" beer with three barrels of ; near beer to obtain the product sold | to drinkers. That cut down the profits of the beer runners to such a de-. gree that they were threatened with j starvation, or at least with having to j sell some of their limousines.
