PARASITESKILL I CORN BORERS Adams County Men Visit Laboratories Where Parasites Are Multiplied One of the most interesting features of the trip made by the Adams county delegation to the corn borer district last week was the visit to the government laboratories at Monroe, Michigan. The men found Dr. I.uginbill, of the United States Department of Agriculture, in charge. Dr. I.uginbill was anxious to answer the numerous questions the men asked as well as to inform them what the government is doing to defeat the European Corn Borer, which is now menacing Atlants county's corn. Dr. I.uginbill revealed the fact that seven different species of parasites are being multiplied and distributed b> the thousands. Two of the parasites are proving et'fecient against the borer. One of them, a wasp-like insect whose scientific name is "exeristes roboratoi", moves along the outside of the stalk until a borer is found, then she pierces the stalk with a long "ovipositor", paralyzes the worm and I distributes eggs which" later hatch into microscopic worms which destroy the borer. Another parasite, which is similar to a fly, enters the burrow of the worm and kills in in a manner similar to the worm described above. Both of these insects have been released by thousands in Michigan, Ohio. Indiana and Pennsylvania. "In spite of the fact that we think these parasites will in time assist greatly in controlling the borer, our present recommendation is that cleanup methods being used", Dr I.uginbill told the farmers, He also brought out the fact that it may be ten to twenty years before the parasites will assist to any maiked degree. Another interesting visit was to the experimental farm, in charge of the Michigan school of Agriculture, the farm being located two or three mfies west of Monroe. There the men were shown plots of corn planted at various times. "Although the later planted corn contained much fewer borers, the yield is lower, due to its not having long enough season." declared Mr. Marsten, manager of the station, Oth-1 er plots showed the results of various fertilizer treatments. Perhaps the experiment which received most com- . ment was the variety test. Farmers expressed great surprise when they found the agricultural college had j planted various varieties and strains I of corn side by. side, some of which' contained three or four times as many borers as others, although planted and cared for identically.
