Lets have an Old Home Week next autumn. What do you say? A little inter* . t displayed by a few dozen people will assure an Old Home Week celebration that Should be the biggest event ever given here. Now all you regulars get in line. Senator Jim Watson has announced his preference, he’s for Vice-President Dawes. You can give a few cans of fruit or some vegetables to the Adams County Memorial hospital and never miss it and such a gift will be appreciated over and over again. • About a million girls are taking domestic science in the schools of America, which is pretty good considering ah we have heard about flappers, most of which however, we haven't believed any way. Be careful about the burning of leaves. Remember the grass and everything else is dry and that a fire may spread to dangerous proportions. Its much better to have the leaves hauled away. Every body plan to get in the spirit of Hallow'een when c big Callithumpiam parade will be given. There will be music and a good time. Its all free and just for fun. -Its up to you to help make it. Get rigged up and don't forget your funny face. Albert Stump, Indianapolis lawyer who scared Senator Jim Watson out of a year's growth when he all but defeated him last year has announced il-at h- will be a candidate for the Democratic nomination for senator next year. He is some runner and if nominated will no doubt cause Senator Robinson a lot of uneasiness. They are keeping the kettle well stirred in Indianapolis. The city council met last night and declared the office of mayor vacant. Then they elected Claude E. Negley, president of the council mayor pro tern, to serve until November Sth when a for sure mayor is to be named. In the meantime Duvall and Mrs. Duvall say “nothing doing’’ and refuse to turn in the keys, except to one of their choice, and so things go along in a regular "Irish stew" fashion. The. Adams county committee to the corn borer districts of northern United States and southern Canada are discovering, according to dispatches from them, that where the borer was permitted to continue at work unmolested he has practically destroyed the corn crop but in other sections where clean-up practises have been engaged in there has been but slight losses. If that is the report when the twenty-two Adams county men get home there is but one thing to do and that is to light the borer. The annual drive for donations of fruit and vegetables to the Adams County Memorial hospital is now on and we are sure that the splendid people of this community, blessed again by a bountiful crop, will again show their appreciation by aiding this cause. The hospital is not conducted for profit but that it may render assistance to those who need it and when they do. Only by a donation of fruits and vegetables can many of
| the delicacies be provided. There Is /no greater blessing than to be able to give towards deserving causes andi this Is one of. the most Important of the year. Don't overlook it. Not so very many years ago there t was a general opinion that city-owned utilities were goblins which in due • time would cat up the cities which I had them. It was propaganda but , many folks believed it. In Decatur I we have an example in our light and ) water plant which is now rapidly bej coming a great asset for the city and > which should eventually reduce taxes > here to a minimum. And tills is not the only place where that is true. Over at Anderson the city plant did a half million dollars the first nine months of this year with a net profit of 1245,000. Os this $139,000 was donated to the city and the balance placed in reserve for maintainence. Its the towns and cities which own their own water and light plants that are sitting astride the world these days. Politics is warming up. especially in the democratic camps and now according to a dispatch from Fort Wayne, friends of Lew G. Ellingham, owner of the Journal-Gazette are booming him for governor. While he has not made announcement, it is claimed he would not refuse such an honor which is sufficient for his j friends to proceed. We know Lew [ pretty well down this way and of | course if he is a candidate, none oth- [ ers need apply For many years he j was owner ami editor of this paper | and as secretary of state he made a j splendid record during the four years j he served. He is qualified splendidly | and would give the state what she I needs — four years of good common , sense government, without any frills. 1 * ¥ ¥ ¥*¥¥¥¥¥¥¥*■ * BIG FEATURES * * . It operates directly from the lighting socket by means of the new ‘‘AC" Radiotrons. That is one of the reasons whv Radiola 17 is the year’s outstanding achievement in radio. Simplicity of operation, sturdy construction and excellent tone quality are outstanding features of this new receiver. Tuning is accomplished entirely by one knob. In addition there is only a volume control to regulate the output and a switch to turn the current on and off. In Radiola 17, the owner finds all of the refinements that recent developments have contributed to the radio art. Its compact cabinet, beautifully finished in mahogany contains all the mechanism necessary for operation. This Radiola is the culmination of years of research in set and tube design to produce, for a moderate price, a completely socket power operated set.
