The load of wood was scattered over the right of way for a distance of 100 yards. The train was slowing down to make a stop at the local station when the accident occured. The engineer brought his train to a stop after the locomotive had traveled about 100 yards. The cow-catcher was bent and the steps on the left side of the locomotive were torn off, hut otherwise the engine was not damaged. A. M. he passed the 300-hour record Alvin ("Shipwreck") Kelly established in Newark week before last. Just passing Kelly wasn’t enough; Haines announced that he and the pole "have been having a good time up here together, and we alm to stick together quite a while yet.” This was Hains' 13th day on cop ot the flag pole. He had to sit through two heavy rains arid days unde- a scorching sun to take the championship away from Kelly.

Adams County People Attend State Meeting Held At Martinsville Representatives from the Adams county rural letter carriers association have returned from Martinsville, where they attended the state meeting in session at that city July 2. 3. and 4 Those attending from this county were Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Graham. Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Beery and grandson, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Maloney. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Smith, Ed Ellsworth, William Myers, Hubert Zerkle, H. O. Davis, Earl Butler and L. Neaderhauser. The state convention will be held at the Oak Park hotel at Lake Wawasee, next July, it wa« decided at th I state convention. —a Decatur Stock Buyer Pays $1,815 For 91 Hogs Mr. McAdo, manager of the March Foundation school, at Van Wert, Ohio sold 91 hogs to Ed Ahr, Decatur stock buyer, this week. The 91 hogs averaged 229 pounds and brought a total of $1,815.30. The |iogs were shipped to the Pittsburgh markets by Mr. Ahr. —o Gary Man Kills His Paramour And Himself Gary. Ind., July 6. — (UP) — While the three small children of his alleged paramour looked on, George Papas shot and killed Mrs. Anna Georgean, 28, and then killed himself. Mrs. Georgean formerly lived in Pittsburgh with her husband, from whom she is separated. Neighbors told police Papas had been supporting her. o Driver Wrecks Own Car Trying To Prevent Crash
Wabash. Ind., July 6— (UP)— The desire of Orville Smyrs, 15, of Kok omo, to prevent an automobile wreck, caused one and probably will cost his life. He pulled his machine to the side of the road when he heard another car approaching from behind, but while looking backward, drove into a ditch and turned over. The youth’s skull was fractured and physicians say there is little chance of recovery.
Train Hits Auto At Crossing In Portland Portland, July 6. — Everett Kerns, Vaughn Lance and Virgil Centers, narrowly escaped serious injury and possibly death, early yesterday morning, when they were struck by the 1:22 a. m., northbound passenger train at Meridian street crossing. The three young men were returning from Celina, Ohio, where they had spent Sunday evening. They had come into the city on state road 27, and were driving south when the accident happened. The car in which they were riding was a Ford coupe, which was owned by Mr. Kerns. He said they were driving at a moderate rate of speed and approached the crossing under control. He stated’ that he was watching a freight train, which was on a siding north of the crossing, and [did not see ths. passenger train, which was approaching from the south.
