Sometimes its easier to find the key to success than it is to find the lock in which the key fits and then again some times tne key doesn’t fit. Lindy might now try a flight to the sun and while there brush off some of the spots which have been causing all the floods and other disturbances on this mundane sphere. The wheat harvest has begun in southern Indiana and according to reports the crop is from average to high, which is contrary to earlier predictions and gives hopes that we may get by after all the bad luck of the spring. South Bend claims a population of 120,000. They should be careful about such statements for its only three years now until census and the report at that time might, probably will, show quite a decline from those t figures and that would be embarrass-I ing to explain. Louie Fairfield, former congressman ' of the twelfth district, is warming up for a come-back next year and hundreds of his friends declare he will come back. He is after the scalp of David Hogg, the young man who went in and took the plum away from Louis in 1921. It ought to be interesting for the folks on the bleachers. Fifty fliers are entered in the proposed airplane flight from San Francisco to Honolulu but if they don’t get everything straightened out soon some twenty-flve-year-old youngster may start out some morning and be there before they know it. Something like that happened you remember a few weeks ago when a half dozen were waiting for weather conditions to fly to Paris. Walter Scott who confessed that he was with his brother when Jacob Maurer, a Chicago drug clerk was killed aud robbed, who was four times sentenced to death, has again been given a chance to escape death or severe punishment. The supreme court of Illinois has granted him a new trial and it is doubtful if -he can again be convicted. Thats the trouble in this country — too much "wigglewagging.” Bids will be received next month for the improvement of Winchester street south from Adams to the Clover Leaf railroad. The property owners petitioned for resurfacing and while receiving bids for that the council is also asking for bids for brick and concrete, giving at least a chance for comparison. The property owners, who must pay for the street, should, and we doubt not will, have the final 'opportunity to decide just what material will be used. ' The government crop report was something of a jolt. The extent of the damage done to the wheat had not been generally appreciated. But there ate compensating conditions. A Short crop means good prices. The outlook at present is for prices ma terially better than last year’s. Corn was late in planting, but the soil is thoroughly soaked, and a moist seedbed means thrifty and rapid growth This part of the country always makes a better corn crop when rain delays the planting, because of the abundance of moisture. Pastures are in prime condition. The whole country is
' green with an unusualy fine stand of grass. Cheer up! Crops are coming along all right.—Lebanon Reporter. With four affidavits filed yesterday against the market master, charging the obtaining of money under false ; pretenses and other offenses, three ! members of the city administration are defendants in criminal proceedings. Garrett, the latest accused, like Mayor Duvall and Controller Buser, will have his day in court. Until hen the people will reserve judgment. | The affidavits are not a finding of 1 guilt, but an expression of the judginent of Prosecuting Attorney Remy j and his aids, who have been Inquiring into municipal conditions, that circumstances exist which justify formal charges.—lndianapolis News. AH of which indicates they need a manager down there. The republican press is spreading the propaganda that "no democrat can Ire elected president next year," which may be, but we don’t just understand why it has been so definitely decided so tar in advance. After keeping cool with Coolidge four years—and we have financially and other wise—we doubt seriously whether everybody will be ready to stand up and yell for four years more of it. And about the biggest thing he can base his campaign on is that of having caught a trout on a worm. What the voter should do next year is to study what will better conditions in the country and support the policies that he feels will do that. Its too far ahead .to firedict which ticket that will be but you need not expect any thing very broad or helpful from the old stand pat crowd which Mr. Coolidge represents, except that which the east wants.

Purdue To Employ New System OJ Grading Lafayette, Ind., June 23 —(UP) —A change in the system of grading will be put into effect at Purdue University next fall, in which the students will be graded on the actual fundamentala they acquire in a given course rather than sttictly on a percentage basis. Under the new plan, an Instructor will outline definitely the Ideas which each student is expected to gather during one particular course, and then, at the conclusion of the work, determine wfiat the student has attained. The final examinations which have counted cue thiid on. the semester grade will be continued, but they wdll no longer count a definite proportion of the final grade the amount depending on the nature of the course. A new grade mark, that of H. Is to be given, denoting completion of a subject with high honor which is above the A mark given by most institutions and now given by Purdue, The A. B. and P. grades also wil be given for succesful completion of a course. *’C” grade requires that the work be taken over or the subject passed suctesstully through examlnationor in some other way approved by the instructor' or depaitment. The "D" grade will continue as the one to denote failure. In order to graduate under the new; plan a student must have received B or higher i nat least 90 semester hours of all four-year courses, or 65 semester hours in 'he threc-year pharmacy course. The chances are regarded as a forward step la the educational field and will help standardize teaching methods of the various departments.
Game Law Does Not Protect “Pine” Squirrel Indianapolis, June 23 —(UP)—Red Squirrels, commonly known as pi.ieys or pine squirrels, are not protected by a closed season under-Indiana’s uew game laws. In view of the old law repealed by the 1927 legislature which protected all squirrels during closed season, considerable confusion and misunderstanding prevails, according to George N. Mannfeld, fish and game superintendent. State conservation officials point out that because some people cannot distinguish red squirrels from gray or fox squirrels protected by law, it has resulted so far this spring in numerous arrests when hunters were found possessing species which it is unlaw ful to kill in closed season. They describe the red squirrel, piney or mountain jack as having a coat of rusty red with white on breast and

The new hunting law established the open season for gray or fox aqulr-. rel shooting from August 1 to Nov-| ember 1, and imposses a bag limit of five squirrels for each hunter per day, I The old law which held a month longer- or until December 1, had no bag limit provision, | In view of the seeming general confusion about the animals Mannfeld today warned hunters to become familiar with the new statute. It is printed on page 93 of the 1927 Acts of the General Assembly which became effective May 16. o— —— Orchard Men Form Co-operative Group IndianapoljF, Ind..
