HOUSE OF DAVID I CASE ADJOURNED Hearing Continued Until M o n d ay; Sensational Testimony Is Heard St. Joseph, Mich.. June 9—(United Press) With several witnesses still to be heard, suit to dissolve the Hone of David colony stood adjourned over the week-end today following sensational testimony of Hazel Wuerth, former “Shiloh Girl” and
alleged victim of “King” Ben Purnell. j For four weeks, former members of the colony have testified concernnig Purnell’s alleged immoral practices, said to have been perpetrated under the guise of religious cermony. Other girls will appear before the state concludes its case. The defense will then present scores of witnesses in refutation. Mrs. Wuerth told yesterday of her experiences with Purnell and his fflvthod of subjecting girl inmates to his will. “He showed us passages in the Bible,” she said, "which he interpreted as indicating that Jesus did the same thing as Benjamin was trying to do. Benjamin claimed to be the younger brother of Jesus and said he was immortal. He told us we could obtain immortality if he purified us.” Mrs. Wuerth also related how she told the story of the House of David to President Woodrow Wilson soon after she left the colony. Going to Washington, she managed to obtain a personal interview ahd outlined the situation to the president. “He seemed much interested,” she said, “But after I left I received a letter from his secretary saying the president would not have time to go into the case.” These threats to look into the affairs the colony frightened Purnell and his followers, according to Mrs. Wuerth. Spies were sent out to follow her after she left the cult, she said, abd in one instance, an attempt was made to kidnap her. “When a raid on Ike Benton Harbor colony was feared, all of the girls living with Benjamin in Shiloh were hidden,” she explained.
