When Beveridge reached the age of 15 he made the decision which directed his life work by taking up the study of law. After several years of study ut night, he entered DePauw University and completed his college course in 1885. Becomes Political Figure He became an Indiana political figure, even before lie left school j when, during the presidential cam-j puign of 1884, lie was an ardent work-i er for .James G. Blaine. For 12 years, after his graduation lie practiced law and made political speches throughout Indiana. His political work climaxed in 1899 when he was elected U. S. Senator j from Indiana. Then followed his Philippine trip and his opening speech to the senate. llis oratorical powers made him the center of a bitter senate fight in 1906, which developed around an amendment to the agricultural bill which provided for closer supervision of the meat packing Industry.
