YELLOW JACKETS DEFEAT ANGOLA D. 11. S. Quintet Halts Winning Streak Os Upstaters, 28-26 In East (lame In a well-played and exciting basketball game played in the Decatur high school gymnasium last night, the Decatur higH school Yellow Jackets broke the winning streak of the strong Ango'.a team and sent the northerners home with the short end of a 28-26 score. It was the first defeat of the season for Angola. A crowd that almost filled the gym to capacity saw the game. In the first game of the evening, the Central eighth graders defeatd thir old rivals, the St. Joseph graders, 1917, and made the scores of the games played so far in the scries for the George Wemhoff Trophy stand oneall. the St. Joe jeam had won the first contest recently. In the second game, the Yellow Jacket Reserves swamped the Monroe high school varsity. 42-17. The Yellow Jackets held the lead throughout their contest with the Angola eagers, but they were continually threatened by the upstaters. At one time in th second half Decatur led 27-16, but Angola started a rally that almost turned the tide in favor of the visitors. The first half ended ' with Dcatur leading, 16-9. Doth teams played a strong defensive game, with the locals having a slight edge in this department. Doth teams missed several shots that should , have scored. The last minute of thganie. when the score stood 28-26, was the most exciting exhibition seen at the D. H. S. gym this year. Roth teams were striving to score. The Yellow Jackets had two shots under the basket that were set-ups during the last minute.. but both shots missed ■ their mark. Decatur scored first when Bebout tipped in a ball when it rebounded from a free throw shot by Bell. Dayhuff scored a free throw for Angola on Krick’s personal. Bell scored two free throws. Krick added one point on a free throw and Bell scored a field goal. Angola time out. Clark counted on Bell’s personal. Dayhuff sank- a field goal and Clark followed suit Score 7-6. Decr.tur. Annadell sank a field goal. Reynolds substituted for Bebout. Captain Cramer scored a field'goal, for Angola. Grimes fouled Reynolds as he shot a field goal and Chet scored one of the two free throws Score, 12-8. Gerber connected for a field goal and German scored from the foul line on Reynolds' personal. Annadell’s field goal ended the scoring of Decatur increased the lead at_ the start of the second half on a field goal by Reynolds and two free throws by Annadell. Clark scored a. free throw and Grimes a field goal. German and Cramer sank field goals and Decatur took time out. Annadell thrilled the crowd when he took the ball of the Angola backboard, dribbled the full length of the floor and scored a field goal on a shot from beneath his own goat Bebout and Annadell scored field goals and Krick a free throw. Score 27-16. Angola started a rally, that netted four field goals and two free throws while Decatur was scoring one free throw. The game ended with both teams fighting desperately. Annadell led the Yellow Jackets in scoring with four field goals and three free throws, but he was ably assisted by every member of the team. The scrap between Cntral and St. Joe was typical of all other CentralSt. Joe battles, with the tide of victory on the side of Central this time. The Blue team held a 9-8 lead at the half and the score was close throughout the game. Debolt, Central forward, was high point man with five field goals and a free throw. Gass led the St. Joe attack with four field goals and a foul toss. Monroe managed to hold the Yellow Jacket reserves pretty well during the first half of their game, the score at the rest period standing 18-10, but the locals unleashed a powerful attack in the second period that snowed under the visitors. Johnny Engle scored eight field goals and five free throws for the winners, and Jimmie Kocher p’ayed a great defensive game. On Wednesday night, the Yellow Jackets go to Bluffton for a return game with their greatest of rivals, the Bluffton Tigers. All three games are expected to be exciting affairs.
