TO ENTER TRI-STATEMEET Yellow Jackets To Play In Basketball Tourney, At Cincinnati In February The Decatur high school Yellow Jackets will participate In the 1927 tristate basketball tournament, held annually under the auspices of Cincinnati University, at Cincinnati, Ohio, February 18 and 19. Coach Herb Curtis announced today. The tournament is an invitational affair, and includes 16 crack basketball teams from Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. The February tourney will he first one in which a Decatur team ever took part. The invitation to bring his team to the meet was received about a week ago by Coach Curtis and yesterday a telegram was received urging the Decatur team to enter the tourney. Coach Curtis wired his consent this morning. The tri-state meet was started by Cincinnati University several years ago. In 1923, Monrovia Indiana high school, where Coach Curtis was in charge of athletics until this year, was defeated in the final game of the meet and in 1924 and 1925 the Monrovia aggregation copped the title by winning all games. The tournament is divided into two classes, for teams of larger cities and also of smaller towns and township school. Class A division is the open division and that is the class in which the Yellow Jackets will participate. The class B. division includes teams of smaller schools. Both meets are held simultaneously. It is hoped that several rooters will accompany the local team to < iiv innati in February. Coach Curtis probably will take a ten-man squad to the tourney. —o Wabash Beats State Normal Crawfordsville, Ind., Dec. 8. (United Press)—Led by £apt. FIELD GOALS r r \ X By Mark M. Upp L The announcement that the Decatur Yellow Jackets are to take part in the annual Tri-State tournament at Cincinnati, Ohio, next February, greatly pleases Decatur fans. Coach Curtis won the 1925 and 1926 tournaments with his Monrovia team and finished in runners-tip position in 1924. The Yellow Jacets should be at their height by the middle of February and will have a fine chance to cop another tri-state title for Coach Curtis. The Commodores will attempt /to increase their string of consecutive victories to seven tonight at the expense of Gibault of Vincennes. The southerners’ strength is unknown, but we’re banking on the Commodores. Word comes from Bluffton that Coach Means may have some new faces in the Tiger lineup when the Bluffton quintet tackles the Yellow Jackets here Friday night. A lively fight is on for the different positions and some new men may get a chance. Coach Curtis has shifted Billy Bell from floor guard to forward and Roy Annadell from forward to floor guard in practice this week with good results and it is probable that the two players may start in their new positions Friday night. Bell and Annadell formerly played forward and floor guard, respectively, and are not altogether novices at those jobs. Two Wells county teams will he seen in action in Decatur this weeken<TT Bluffton will play Decatur in the D. H. S. gym and Ossian will battle the Kirkland Kangaroos in the old gym the same night. “Bud” Voglewede, center and captain of the Decatur Catholic high school quintet in 1924-25, got into the Notre Dame-Armour Tech game at South Bend for several minutes Monday night, in a Notre Dame uniform, and dropped in four field goals and two free throws for a total of ten

I points. The Irish won, 51-14. Bud scored nearly as many points I himself as the entire Armour team did. He is a sophomore ’ this year and since Captain Johnny Nyikos is playing center, ; Bud's position, it is unlikely that I he will land a regular berth this I season, but he certainly will get into several of the Notre Dame games and will be a strong candidate next year. Bud is a hard worker and conscientious trainer and such a combination usually brings results. Good work, Bud. The Fort Wayne Hoosiers won another game in the American Basketball league last Hight, defeating Philadelphia, 30-25. The Quakers 'stored 19 points on free throws and | the Hoosiers 10. Looks like the boys might have been a little rough. The two teams play at Fort Wayne again tonight. Cash Keller, columnist de luxe for the Hantington Press, includes Decatur's Yellow Jackets in his honorable mention list again this week. So far, his own Vikings have not rated that high in his estimation. His “big ten” for this week is: “Logansport, Bedford, Martinsville, Washington, Columbus, Muncie. Connersville, Vincennes, Bloomington and Frankfort.” As a move to relieve congestion and reduce the danger of a panic with injurious results in case of a file, we suggest that another exit be I opened at'the Decatur high school | gymnasium.
