Five Beats Invaders 41-19; Girls Lo s e To c Visitors, 26-18 Decatur high school’s Yellow Jackets made it three straight last night by taking the Garrett quintet into camp on the local floor, to the tune of 41-19. The game was marred by officiating that was altogether to lax, but the large crowd of fans that filled almost every nook and corner in the gym, had an enjoyable evening seeing Coach Curtis' boys romp to victory. The Central school eighth grade i?am started the evening off in the ’ right manner by taking their old rivaiS, the eighth graders from Bluffton, into camp by a score of 25-14. Cartwright, Garrett’s star forward, < pened the scoring with a long field goal, two minutes after the start of the game, but Gerber soon tied the score with a short shot after a beautiful pass from Bell. Garrett took time out to talk it over and when play was resumed Bell gave the Yellow Jackets the lead with a long field goal. The Yellow Jackets played Tagged at times last night, making several
I bad passes, but they tightened up when necessary and, on a whole, showed improvement owr jrevloiis performances. Tney worked together in fine’shape. Burtch and Cartwright, carried the brunt of the offense and defense for the Invaders. The game between the girls’ teams was hard fought all the way, with the locals trailing by only a few points throughout. The visitors took a lead of 14-7 in the first half, but the lead had been cut to 14-11, when the half nedeck The margin separating the two teams was practically the same in the second half until near the end of the game when Garrett spurted ahead. FIELD GOALS ? V By Mark M. Upp The Commodores dined on Bwekeyeg again Thursday night. The Yellow Jackets must have found something to their liking up in the Garrett last night, too. Monroe’s fighting eagers broke their losing streak last night, and took Pleasant Mills into camp. Glad that Everhart’s boys won a game, but sorry that it had to be an Adams county team that had to take that drubbing that was stored up in the Monroe quintet. The Commodores had a hard time putting the ball through Gwh little hoop Thursday night. It was a good thing they didn't need points very
badly. That was a sour exhibition of offiqiating In the Decatur Garrett game last night. If that was good refereeing. then wo are as funny as Will Rogers. Players on both teams were permitted to hop, step and jump each time the ball and the bottndry lines must need repainting, the way the referee missed seeing them. After taking a 30-18 drubbing at the hands of Polingtown in a game at Pennville last week-end,
■ the Jefferson township eagers plotted up a nice little "turn-the-txble’’ stunt during the past week end handed the Po-lingtown boys lemon at Berne last night, 2927 in an overtime. That's playing basketball. . The Pennville Bull Dogs bested th< •i-iriford Gorillas in a mean battle a ‘‘.’.nvllle last night, the Dogs win ulr<r, 27-25. The fans must have recr'-. .1 their money's worth, at any rate. I '7e have a new contributor wh< signs his name, Bullsh E. Vick. W< also have some contribs from Cente , U;>p which we have been unable t ■ put in print for the last two days •! Here they are: Anyhow, the Commodores won their fifth straight and they are headed for Geneva with the intent of making it six in a row. "Dear Mark M. Upp: Glad to see that my (everybody’s) friend. Monty Oh! has opened up with his ‘tribs’ (as he calls 'em.) I also congratulate Center Vpp on starting the ball a rollin’. “It would be a good undertaking. Monty, for someone to offer a trophy to the winner of Adams County Ten. Maybe Mark would offer it, or maybe you. Monty. "If Coach Curtis has his men using
the pivot like they did in the Monroeville game, Garrett will be asking the referee where th ball Is. But then, it takes smart men to do this and Coach Curtis has them. z "Good luck, Commodores, Yellow Jackets and all other Big Ten teams playing out-of-county quintets. "Your Skipper, • BULLSH E. VICK." “I would like to see u game beween Central and St. Joe eighth trades. It would be a good game as [ believe the two teams are evenly Hatched as they always have been. The St. Joe* eighth grade performed n a game with Commodore seconds he former winning by one point. The It. Joe crew are small but fast and >ne day will be Commodore players, ’remising stars of St. Joe Sth are: lass, (captain), Vian, Lose, Metzker, lolthouse and Coffee. "When the window was broken last tight the following statement was eard from the balcony, ‘Oh, what uade me spit at that window’. "At last I got to see ’Mongo’ Meyer »ut not in action, he had a comfortble seat side of France Confer on he bench during the game. "Decatur Yellow Jacket’s notice: Jo not eat at the restaurant tongiht. on are to have lunch in the Garrett.’’ "CENTER UPP.”
Father Hession, of the Decatur Catholic high schbol. has* received a very complimentary letter from Coach Palmer of the Bellevue, Ohio, Catholic high schpol team, regarding the treatment received by the Buckeyes here recently. Coach Palmer says: "On behalf of n»y basketball team and the followers of the game at Decatur, Ind., I want to say that never have we received such cordial welcome as your School and Parish extended to us. while in Decatur. We certainly enjoy true sportsmahship and we surely will take our hats off to Decatur Catholic high school. We hope
that our mutual relationship will always be long and enduring. Longing to see you here March 4, for a real thri|), Sincerely yours, Floyd A. Palmer.” Joe Krick, the big sophomore guard for the Yellow Jackets, sure was stopping everything that came his way last night. His performance last night was his best. Fort Wayne Central lost to the state champs at Marion laST night, 37-29. The Yellow Jackets meet Central at Fort Wayne next Saturday night. The Yellow Jackets tackle Bluffton here the night before, and Central goes to Muncie to play the Bearcats.
The ‘Bluffton Tigers, by the way, trounced the Montpelier Pacers at Montpelier last night, 36-26, in their first start, Ellenberger, former Berne flash, scored six field goals for Bluffton. t The G. E. quintet goes to Berne tonight to play the Berne A. C. five, and will play hosts to the Berne M. Y. M. quintet here Tuesday night. Both Berne outfits are plenty good. Tonight, we have the Commodores playing Geneva, at Berne; Berne playing Kirkland in the old gym he r e; Monmouth going to New Haven. ______ The Hartford City Airdales are howling in delight today over their 22-18 win over Shortridge, of Indianapolis. last night.
