Win. lose or draw, lets smile and keep on trying to make this the best community in thtj world. It was an ideal November day and not so bad for an election. The vote in Indiana ought to exceed 1,200,000. Thanksgiving is but three weeks away from Thursday and then a month later comes Christmas. Its time to think about these great days and about ‘ doing your shopping early.” By the way, Hallowe'en, usually an event of considerable prominence, slipped by this year, almost without notice, it came on Sunday evening and we believe there was less celebration. destructive or otherwise, than there lias been in fifty years. How can we help the community? Thats our real desire and our business. We are through with elections now for a couple of years and that’s * good for there are many things to be ’ done we feel sure and we are willing |. to take off our coats and help do them. Houdini, the world's greatest magician, who performed many marvelous feats was unable to extricate himseif from the shackles of disease and because of his carelessness in I taking care of an attack of append!- I citis is now in New Yotk. His casket is the one which he used to do one of his mysterious escapes, but mar- I velous as he has been in life, he is of the same clay as the rest of us | and he was as helpless when death was his antagonist. Election day is drawing to a close. It has been an interesting campaign, unusual in several ways with more | inside work than usual and 1-ss pub lie rallying. The resells will of course interes t everyone and when we notice how keen every citizen is ! to secure the news after an election we sometimes wonder why more pep is not manifest during the weeks before an election, but in this day and age when there are so many things to distract attention, its a difficult matter to do every thing we are called to do. Any way its over again and its time to get down to regular business. Election returns will be received tonight at this office of course, where we have leased the county telephone lines, giving every one the privilege of telephoning as often as they desire and without cost. We will also receive tho United Press returns from the state and nation and will relay these to other points as requested It is our first desire to serve you all with the news as quickly as possible and for that purpose we will have extra help and two added telephones. The returns will also be received at the Murray Hotel, the Elks club, Democratic headquarters and other places. In many homes the state returns will be heard over the radio and all who desire to do so will know the news of todays battle of ballots within a few hours after the polls close. We live in a progressive age. If todays election is adverse tt President Coolidge, be will in all probability be out of the running foi the nomination for what would prac tically amount to a third term. The most likely candidate to be backed by the administration is Secretary
I Hoover of the department of com ’ merco, but he will be strenously oppos<‘d by Governor Lowden, of Illinois, and by others who have not always agreed with hi* policies. It will bo an interesting ‘'get-ready” and in the meantime the democrats will be grooming the man who makes the most apparent call on the popularity of the voters. Unless some changes occur during the next two years, you can bank upon a change of Washington administration for the American people will uot long tolerate inactivity when big problems are to be settled upon which depend tho com mercial lite of the nation. Here now is a proposition for legislation. sponsored by a women's organization, compelling a man about to marry to prove his economic standing and his mental capacity first, and i equiring a would-be bride to show that she could support herself and her children if her husband died. Both are excellent ideas. The man who marries ought to be able to support a family, and a widow with young children on her hands who can take care of herself and them without assistance has a position of independence which is worth while. But why laws on the subject? Do we really need any more laws of any sort? Such matters may fairly be left to the individual. No doubt a man ought not to marry recklessly. : But he might make a very good hus- . band and father though he took ; financial chances when he married' and could not measure‘up to some' legislative standard of income. As ; tor women, the number of them who are unable to earn their own living if called upon to do so is comparatively small in these days.—Terra Haute Tribune. o + BIG FEATURES ♦ + OF RADIO * +♦++♦++♦+++♦♦♦+♦ WEDNESDAY'S FIVE BEST RADIO FEATURES Copyright. 1926, by United Press Central Standard Time WEAF —New York, 492 M and hookup, ! 8:30 p. m. —Gilbert and Sul- '
