In h was chosen grand secretary and treasurer of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Fireman. Thirteen years later he became president of the Am erican Railway Union. In 1894 Debs was leader of the grj.t railroad strike which finally nece sitated the calling out of Federal troops by President Cleveland, before it was settled. That was the beginning of 35 years in the public eye, which were : > make him a five time presidents!!candidate, the leader of the socialist party, and one of the most hated, feared, and loved men of his day. In 1900 he was nominated for the Presidency and polled 87,814 votes.: The next three presidential election years also saw Debs name on the bai-I lot and in the year of 1912 he was given 901.872 votes. He refused the nomination in 1916. but in 1920, while a prisoner at Atlanta he polled almost 1.000,000 votes. On June 16, 1918 Debs appeared before the Ohio Socialist convention with address. On Sept. 4. he began a ten year sentence at Atlanta for vio'etion of the espionage act as a result of this speech. . A legal tight to free him insued but the socialist leader was forced to remain in Atlanta until the Harding Administration when he was quietly re-:
