The Dally Democrat goes to press at noon today so that the newsboys and office force might attend the big fair. If we missed an item call phone lotto anil we will be glad to publish it Friday. Come on folks let’s grease the old wheel and get a good start on the fall season. Business is good where they make it so mid Decatur is one of the best trading centers in this part of the state. Take the family to the fair and enjoy the day seeing the sights, the races and looking over the exhibits. A county fair provides an opportunity for you to meet your friends and enjoy a ilay off and you'll feel better the next day. It's funny that these rains have to come just when the Chautauqua and fair is on and work in the harvest fields is heaviest. It could be worse so why not enjoy what we have and forget about the old rain. A quanity of bootleg whisky was found in New Jersey and an analysis shewed it to be 180 per cent proof, with one part of ether to four parts of alcohol. It was labeled, “Undertakers Delight’’ and no doubt was. And still people drink it. Court will open next week, school bells will ring again and it's time that we re thinking of the fall festival or ’he corn and viiry .-how. Auulus to make it one of the biggest events ever held here. Pola Negri is consoled because the physician at the bedside of Rudolph Valentino informed her that the moviq hero's last thoughts were of her. Valentino must have been a real lover for he had two of his former wives and a fiancee or two at his funeral, all of who did a certain amount of weeping am. seemed to claim him as their own. The Berne Witness, which also engages in polities now and then, makes the assertion that a vote for the democratic candidates for United States senator means a vote for the entry of this country into the league of nations. To refresh the editor’s memory we w-ish to recall that the last republican congress voted to enter the World Court, which Col. Theodore Roosevelt says is just another name for the league. America ; has now entered this court or league through the back door, as You.ig Teddy said in his speech in Fort Wayne last week. Wells county democrats will open their campaign Saturday night at Uniondale and Albert Stump, candidate for United States senator will be the principal speaker. The public is invited to the meeting and the boys over there are planning to roll up the I hsual democratic majority in the i November election. Mr. Stump is an j excellent speaker and those who have heard him vouch that he knows what he is talking about and enjoy his fair way of discussing the important issuer, in tfie campaign. Wells county democrats will be glad to welcome
I visitors from Adams county at the Saturday night meetng. The tragic death of Charles Gilbert, sixteen year-old Decatur boy who lost r. his life by drowning In the pond adr jacent to the Krick Tyndall tile mill Is regretted and brings sympathy to ’’ the family. Hardly a year goes by without a drowning and this is one reason why the city municipal awimo ming pool was built, so that children J,' might learn to swim and be under J 0 the eye of an instructor or supervisor G who could be called upon if needed.; 9 j The city swimming pool has attract-1 ed many boys and girls this summer , and many a boy and girl has learned to swim. Parents are grateful for thei place for they can rest at ease with the thought that the chances of frowning in the pool are not as likely . as in a sand pit or river. For this > reason provision should be made to secure permits for the boys and girls , who wish to learn to swim. The county councilmen, commissioners, town and city councils, township advisory boards and school boards will meet next week and fix the tax rates in their respective taxing units. Budgets ami estimated tax rates to cover governmental operation and expenses have been published and the proper officials will decide ’next week what the tax rates, collectable in 1927 will be. In most cases
