It is ; believeff -hat the injury to his back : is not serious and that h e will recover from the effects of the imprlson- ’ ment. i The clothes st the fve were black . and soaked with the chill waters that j drip constantly from spur and stalganiatite in th e American Fluorspar and Zinc company mine. They stripped ■ off their wet, heavy garments while ' a little group milled about them. ' - Call* For Hi* Mules , "I want my mules," was the first t request to Harry Watson, th e only - unmarried member of the 1 gotta' be gettin' on home." j One of the most maddening experiences of their week in the 1 depths of the mine was the tact that t they could hear water running some ' where far below them, but were unable to reach it. f' To quench their terrific thirst the ' men sucked water from old. rotten. watersoaked timbers that supported ‘ the stopping, or high scaffolding, used ■ in aine and fluorspar mining to reach the vein. * The men were rescued by Freeman Cobb, who crawled into the old shaft . of the mine, through the mud and gush and met his brother, Randolph - Cobb and his brother-in-law, Roy ' Jam**, who had started to crawl out of the pocket. These two men were . brought out first. He then went hack ' i
after Georg,. Catillo, U. B. Wilson' and Harry I¥*t*on, (he remaining three men. Official* had all but given up hope nt rescuing the entombed men alive. More than 500 men worked day and night to reach them. Several others who were |n the mine when rock and water started pouring down “eaped l>y ILelng feet before the rush and ciimbiug timbers to safety. The crew had been operating a drill 6<io feet from the mine entrance and were believed to have struck an overhead lake. The men were in good condition, according to rescuers, hut weak from lack of hxxl and the chill of the air of the mine. Those rescued were: Roy James, 30, Randrdph Cobb. 32, Harry Wat son, 26, George Catillo, 37, U. B Wilson, 44. , Rescuers said tire air line running through the debris to the place where the men were caught by the /fall of earth after the lake was punctored saved them. Hdpe that the miners would be rescued alive vanished last night. Even if the victims escaped suffocation or drowning in water which trickled into the shaft, rescuers feared the men had starved. But the sinking of a new shaft went on. Rock struck 10 feet from the main shaft t*o days before was not encountered in the new shaft started, early yesterday. Th« main shaft was reached at 8:15 a. m. It was a matter of ortly a few minutes until debris barring the passage was wrenched away. Public sale, Butler & Ahr sale barn, Ist street. Decatur, commencing 1 p. m. Saturday, Aug. 14.
