European Movie Firms Combine For Finish Fight Against American Films By C. P. William* (United Pre»» Staff Correspondent) London. July 22—(United Press)lUltish, French. Italian anil German film producers are sharpening jjteir knives In unity for a "fight to the finish" with the American industry. A conference of film producers of the four countries will be held in Farid some time In the Fall, it is eald. The object of the meeting is to consider a cooperative agreement to meet American competition through development of the industry in Europe. American representatives will not be invited Internalicnallzation of the BHtish and Continental productions has not yet proven sufficient to meet the pressure of increasing competition front America and effort will be made to produce pictures on a more unified ha-is. British producers are already I producing pictures In France and I French producers are malting pictures I in Beilin. Get man companies are pro- I diicing pictures in Rome in an attempt I to exchange knowledge of productions,. J Great Britain Is the best film mar- I ket outside of the United States. There I are 3.500 motion picture theatres in I Great Britain. 3.400 in Germany and I luoif than 2,000 in France. At the I present time. American producers I have an almost complete monopoly on|| British theatres, where the "block- I booking" ystem, recently ivestigated I by the Federal Trade Commission in I America, has practically excluded I British pictures. The German films are I protected by a law providing that ex- I hibitors mint book one German film I tor every fofeign film taken for ex-11 hibition. | Eng'ish papers have recently waged I a vigorous campaign against all types I of American films shown in England I Film and diamatic critics are daily fill- I ing their columns with bitter criti-ll cisms of all points of American films. I1 English weeklies and monthly maVa-ll zines quickly took up the cudgel a- I gainst American films following the I a lead of the London Daily Mail, the I Daily •Express and other prominent H newspapers. I American distributors answer the I charges of "monopoly through the I block-booking system" by* declaring I that English producers are booking I films that can best fill their theatres I and that when booking these “Jiest" | pictures, exhibitors must contrac t to I take other productions. | — o ■ New Coach Os Emerson I High, Gary, Is Welcomed | Gary.
