REPORT OF SEEO COON TESTMIOE Less Than 50 Per Cent, of Corn in Geneva Tester Fit For Seed The first corn placed in the com munity seed corn tester at Geneva was read Friday. If the results are any indication of the quality of seed coin in general, farmers will need to b c very careful of the corn they plant this spring. Os the 379 ears tested only 185. or less than 50 per cent were discarded because the sprouts were so weak they wer e considered practically worthless in the ground. ■ The main advantage of the "modified rag doll." method being used at Geneva is that weak ears aie discarded along with dead ears, making it possible for the farmer to plant onlygood, strong seed. Tests have shown that weak germinating seed corn, even though it might germinate 100 per cent yields much les than strong seed corn. In fact, much "weak" seed corn even fails to push sprouts thiough the ground. Undoubtedly, many farmers who have given their seed corn an adequate test rvill plant corn that will bring poor yields because it is weak. | The best 100 ears tested showed Gi strong ears. 28 weak and 8 dead. Another 100 ears tested 63 strong. 28 weak and 9 dead. Hix kernels from each ear were tested, giving enough to make a reliable estimate of the strength of the ear. In some in stances, one kernel of the six proved an extra strong one and the remainder were totally dead, proving the lack of reliability of testing only one kernel per ear. Os 94 ears submitted by another farmer. 42 were strong. 18 weak and 34 were dead. The planting of such seed would insure only 35 per cent of strong stalks. Another man had 85 placed in the tester, of which 16 were strong. IS weak and 51 were dead.) P. W. Dunwiddie Is operating the tester, which is being financed by the Geneva Chamber of Commerce. The testing is being done absolutely free of charge for the fanners and corn will be tested as long as it is brought in by the farmers. —o Indianapolis — No rebates shall be granted automobile owners when they transfer license plates from one <ar to another, even if the latter is oflower classification, it has been ruled by Attorney General Gilliom.
