ONE CANH'BATE FOR G. A. R. OFFICE Janies W. Spain, Os Evansville, Only One Seeking Post Os Commander Indianapoiia, May I.— (United | Press.l only one candidate has. definitely announced his intention of running for commander of the Indiana , department. Grand Army of the Kt-1 public, at the 47th annual encampment opening at Port Wayne, May I 17. according to information at department headquarters here today. James W. Spain. Evansville, Is i a4'tively in tin running for the honor, but no other names have tome to th-; front up to this time. With the encampment only a half a month away, p is considered tin-, usual that only one candidate has appeared for the post of department, commander. Tradition has made it a rule that . no department commander ever succeeds himself and in past years several candidates were usually in a hot ' contest for the office. Plans for the encampment are! rapidly nearing completion, according to word received at headquarters from Kort Wayne. Arrangements for the encampment are being left almost entirely in the hands of th- - Wayne committee. I Between four and five hundred veterans of the war between the states are expected to attend th<* encampment this year. Although there were 2.11 S members enrolled in the Indiana department on March 31. it will lie impossible so- a great many of them to attend the meeting. Sickness and the infirmities of old age is rapidly mowing down the ranks of the blueclad veterans, according to Albert .1. Ball, assistant adjutant general of the department. “The hoys enjoy attending the ncampments as much as ever." Ball said. “But it is impossible for them to do so in a great many cases. The avetage age of the G. A. 11. veto: -a in Indiana is S 3 which explains the inability of the comrades to turn or.t as they would like to.” Indiana has always been one of the leading states in the work of the Grand Army, according to Ball. "The national organization was formed in Indianapolis in ISB6 an I Boston is the only c'iy in the union that has entertained tin- national encampment as often as the Hoosu-r capital. Both have been host io the old soldiers five times. The Hoosier delegation i; always one of the largest at any national get-together and it is not the int.m tion of the department to lot this reputation drop. The national encampment at Des Moines this year will be the sixtieth in the history of th e veteran organization and each year sees fewer of the comrades able to attend. The largest encampment ever held, one of Hie galhetings in Boston, iw between 45,000 and 50,tnt0 in alt n.Iance but witli the men in blue dying at the rate of eightee to twenty
