Feb. 25—Open. —— o Bluffton High School Interested In New Game Bluffton, April 29.—A new sport “Katchring" is being introduced into the activities of the Bluffton high high school at the present time. The game is played with rings and a mechanical tossing device, which is used in batting Jhe rings to the outer field. The game is' played in a field which is 30 feet long and 25 feet wide. In this space there are two bases and a home plate. The game may be played with as high as ten players on each team. The tossing device is made of wood aftd is in the nature of a spring board, which tosses a rope ring into the air as the flipping part of the Sevice is stepped on by the person at bat or in the home plate. As the ring is tossed to the opposite end of the field it is caught on spears, which the outfielders use in the place of gloves. The game was introduced in Baltimore only a short time ago and has from that time until now made a great hit in the various sport sections
of Baltimore. Devices for the new game are being made at the high school by L. E. Templin today, and it is expected to have the game being played here in only a few days. Rules as to the pjayin'g of the frame will be published as soon as the devices and fields are completed. This promises to be one of the leading sports of the summer season among the youngsters of the city. The new game, however, can be Played by the older citizens as well as by the youngot. o —— Indiana Beats Purdue In Baseball Game, 4-3 Bloomington, Ind., April 29 —Indiana defeated Purdue here yesterday,' 4 to 3, in the opening -conference game on the local field. Two walks, two singles and a triple, scored all of Indiana's runs in the fourth. Wilcox Os Purdue, was responsible for his team's runs, bringing runners across the Plate with his timely hitting in the fifth and seventh innings. Third Negro Convicted For Attack On White Girl Madisonville, Ky., April 29. —(United Press) —Columbus Hollis, the third negro tried here for the assault on a 16-year-old white girl, today was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment. Bunyon Fleming and Nathan Bard, two negroes who wer tried before Hollis, are sentenced to be hanged for the attack. It took a jury 8 minutes to find Bard guilty, while Fleming was convicted in 10 minutes 0 Sickness Drives Two Aged Persons To Death Louisville, Ky., April 29. — (United Press) —Sickness drove two aged persons to death here. Francis M. Chappell, 69, formerly of Kendallville, Indiana, shot his wife as she lay in bed here, then sent a bullet crashing into his brain. Both were dead when their son forced hfs way into their house. The son, John, was with his parents late the night before. At that time his father said to him: “I don’t see how 1 can stand it much longer.” o -... 'Liquor Ration Defended As Temperance Measure Stockholm, April 29. — (United Tress)—A prohibitionist petition to curtail the privilege of every Swedish family head of approved -standing to buy a limited amount of liquor each week has been turned down by the government’s Liquor Control Board, which declared that “in the interest of temperance" the ration should not be made smaller. The smuggling of contraband, foreign made spirits has recently been reduced and as the majority of drunkenness cases have been traced to this source, the board fears a revival of the bootleg trade should the legal amount be further restricted.
New Diesel Engines Made For Government San Francisco, April 29 — (United i Press)—CqQpatmetiOß of the flrat of three 3,000-horsepower Diesel engines to be built for the shipping hoard in 1 connection with the government’s $25,- ■ OOt.OOO conversion program. Is being I completed at the Pacific Diesel plant I here. Those engines, with 22 150-horse-lower auxiliary motors, will be used on some of the 14 steamers selected by shipping board to be converted into motorships.
