Sr The hopes of the disciples were nt- 3 terly shattered when Je»u* told them hr about the cruse. He had told them U that He was going away and they could not follow Him. Their hearts g£ were flooded with grief. He consoled them by— Jft I. Pointing to the Reunion In the |r Father’s Houie (vv. 1-3). 1. He Asked Them to Trust In Him bn Kven as God (v. 1). Faith In the God man Christ Jesus will steady the heart no matter how an intense the grief, nor how great the sorrow. jE 2. He Infurhied Them That He Was tr Going to th* Father's House In Heaven to Prepare a Home for Them (v. 2). 3J He assured them that there was abundant room for all. Heaven Is an [I eternal dwelling place. Only those | can enter who have made the neces- ■ sary preparation here. g 9. He Assured Thera That He Would I Come Again and Escort Them to J Heaven (v. 3). | Jesus will not wait for His own to ■ J come to Him, but will come and call B S forth from the grave those who have j ■ died and transform living believers • J and take them all to be with Himself g 1! In the heavenly home forever more. L j 11. Revealing the Way to the Fa- jL ther'e Hous* (vv. 4-11). |t Jesus Informed the disciples that . J they knew the place and the way to & j which He was going. To this Thomas I ” Interposed a doubt, In answer to J 1 which Christ asserts that He Is— a jj 1. The Way to God (v. 6). J ] He Is more than a mere guide or t “ teacher; He is the way Itself. He Is [ ■ the door of the sheep fold; yea, the - J very entrance to the tree of life. 2. The Truth (v. 6). He Is not merely the teacher, but the Truth Incarnate, in Hl* iucarna- | > tlon the spiritual and material worlds > 1 w»r» united. Therefore, every line of Sji truth, whether spiritual or material. I 2 converges in Him. No one can ever J = have the real truth about anything = who does not have Christ In Him es- ■ j peclally we have the truth about God. [I 2 To pretend to know God, while at the | • same time rejecting Jesus Christ Is « J utter folly- Only as Christ reveals bS God can man know Him (John 1:18). L ■ 3. The IJfe (v. 6). Christ is not merely the giver of ■ > life, but He Is the essence of life. ■ I only those who receive Christ have “fy life in the true sense. Thia Is a truth I . which cannot be arrived at by intel- j[ 1 lectual processes. It Is a mystery = 1 which can only be penetrated by faith. Jfi 111. Assuring Them That His Work Was to Continue (vv. 12-14). Jesus' going away was not to end SB the work which He had begun. This = J no doubt means that through the mln- ■ j Istry of the spirit-filled disciples the B S work which He had begun would as- ■ ■ sume larger proportions. After the ■ 1 Day of Pentecost the Gospel took a Sp] much wider range. During His mln- I > Istry the message was confined to the qjp Jews, while under the ministry of the 3 2 disciples It was only limited by the “ j world itself. The disciples’ ministry was ushered In by the conversion of three thousand In one day. S 3 IV. Promises Another Comforter bfij (n. 15-17). Q) The word "comforter” means lit- [yp erally one called to the side of another to give help, protection and deliver- J 1 ance. This comforter was the Holy Spirit. Jesus was the comforter while [ ■ here In the body. The Holy Spirit ? ! was to be another comforter. V. Assuring Thom of His Return to I ? Thom (vv. 18-24). fib Although Christ went away He did ■ • not leave Hia disciples as orphans. ■ 1 He is spiritually present with them sp] always.
