HOUSE TAKES |> UP TAX BILL Fight Started Over Question Os Repealing The Estates Tax - r * Washington, Feb 23. — (United Press)—The $387,000,000 federal tax reduction bill wa.i taken up in the house this afternoon for final approval or rejection of the conference revision and immediately precipitated a fight over the question of repealing the estate tax a-, voted by the senate Representative Garner, Texas, minority leader, attacked the senate demoef-ats who approved repeal, an t the American bankers' league. He blamed the league for the proposal which was lost in the conference revision. Rescue 45 Persons From Fire In Eastern Sanitarium New York, Feb. 23—(United Press) —Ten children were pmong the 45 patients rescued early today from the Bay Ridge <sanitarium, when fire destroyed the interior of the two-story frame and stucco structure. One man was on the operating table when the blaze began but surgeons completed their work and the patient was wrapped in blankets and taken through a driving snow-storm to the nurses' home, next door. Many of the Women in the hospital were maternity cases and police received a report that three babies were horn during the Excitement of the fire. The fire is believed to have started from an overheated furnace. | o . MONROE COUNTY HAS | HIGHEST BIRTH RATE (CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE) 30 children and Blackford, with 22.2 and 26 children. More children were born in Marion county, with Indianapolis included than in any other county. The statistics show there were 617 births in the capitol city but the birth rate was only 19.1. Lake county was second, with 322 children but a birth rate of 19.7. Only eight counties in the state reported more than 100 births during tite month of December. These counties together with the number of births and the birth rate were. Marion and I Lake and St. Joseph, 239. with a rate of 1 27.7; Allen. 237 with a rate of 24.9: Vanderburgh, with 153 and a rate of 19.9; Vigo with 118 and a rate of 14.1; Madison with 120 and a rate of 20.8; and Elkhart with an even 100 and a rate of 21.3. Only three counties in the state reported less than ten births during the month of December. Feb. 23.—(United Press) —Habeas corpus proceedings on behalf of tlie countess of Catheart, barred from the United State for “moral turpitude” which were to have been argued today before Federal Judge Goddard, have been postponed for one week. Countess Cathcart's attorney, Arthur Garfield Hays, however, believes he knows the real reason for the sudden change of front by the government. ■■o Discovery May Lead To Cure For Diabetes Evanston. 111., Feb. 23—(United press) — An important discovery which they hope will lead to a cure for Diabetes, has been announced by Doctors A. C. ley and J. I. Farrell of Northwestern University. The doctors announced the successful transplantation of a portion of the pancreas into the mammaray glands of the dog. After the operation it was found that the pancreatic transplant produced a sufficient amount of insulin to prevent Diabetes occuring when the rest of the pancreas was removed. The secretion of important digestive juices was also continued by the grateful portion, they said. However, both doctors said that methods of transplanting are not yet sufficiently practical to be used in the cure of Diabetes in man. o William Purcell Dies Evansville, Ind., Feb. 23 —(United Press)—William L. Purcell, 70, prominent Southern Indiana contractor is dead here today following a heart attack suffered while walking on the street here.
