Suzanne Lenglen. France's tempermental tennis champion, twice triumphed today over Helen Wills, th" jniperturable American fcrll. Mlle. Lenglen, with all the drama tics which have added color to her careerj overcame MJsh Wills’ s,tub born opposition in the singles ami defeated her, 63 and 8-6. Then, after but a short rest. Miss Wills, paired witli Mlle. Henrietta Contoslavos mol Lenglen again in the doubles, paired with Mlle. Didi Vlasto. Lenglen ami Vlasto won 6 I and 8-6. But the strain of two victories over the quiet Californian was too much for the great Lenglen and at the close <J’ the doubles match, she fainted. Doctors and her mother, the latter weeping, rushed to her. side. The physicians attributed the collapse to nervous strain. Cannes, France.. Feb. 16.—Suzanne Lenglen today defeated Helen Wilis in the Carlton ch|b tournament finals, 6-3 and 8-6, and' , onco more proved her claim to supremacy among women tennis players of the world. The great French star, however, was hard pressed by the courageous young American champion and it was only •after a hard-fought first set and a sensational second set that Suzanne finally flashed her way to victory. Lenglen victory. j She seemed to be on the point of 'retiring, then suddenly rushed back to her position, started smashing the ball with angry ferocity and overwhelmed the young American. Miss Wills was very tired when she left the court and was troubled with a slight nose bleed. | "I am absolutely disgusted with everything that has happend here," Mlle. Lenglen said after the match. "I haven't said my last word about the officials.” I Miss Wills was in a much better mood. She smiled when her friends gathered around her and fenced off any offers of sympathy. ; It was an enjoyable match,” she - aid. "Mlle. Lenglen is just as good as I thought she was." Mrs. ('. A. Wills, mother of the defeat, d girl, presented the Lary Wavetree Cup to the winner and the Duke of Connaught presented the several other trophies that were offered. Miss Wills stood by smiling graciously when Mlle. Lenglen was crowned with a wreath of flowers and borne off on the shoulders of her admirers. The Yellow Jackets went good in practice last night and succeeded in swamping the second team, piling up more than 100 points.
