Figures show a decline in the prison population of the United States and if they don't oust Ma Ferguson and a few other tender hearted governors. it will probably so continue. The tax reduction bill is to be passed this week if some of the objectors have to be choked and hung in tlie hat room, according to the leaders who have announced that it must go through one way or another and go through right now. Good, it isn't long until‘March 15th. Candidates continue to announce for the democratic primary and that's a very good sign, indicating greater interest than for several years past, faith in a democratic victory this year ami an interesting contest that will bring out the voters. Mrs. Rosa Jones, of Fort Wayne, has been allowed s7s.mi per week and her attorneys SI,OOO by Judge Sutton, which ought to keep everybody feeling good while the suit is pending except Jones and since it is alleged he has an income of $35,000 per year, he probably isn’t worrying much about these little details. Jim Stillman, once king of Wall street and his wife Anne, whose family troubles were aired a year ago in away not exactly favorable to either side have patched up their difficulties and are now on the Atlantic enjoying a second honeymoon. Fine. Wo hope they stay "patched" and we are sure the public can stand it if they can. Lets forget them and perinit them to "live happily ever afterwards.” The anthracite coal strike has been on now for six months and the only wail is from those towns in Pennsylvania where the industry is the dynamo of existence. Over the country the people are getting along fairly well by the use of bituminous coal, oil and other fuels but the coal section is suffering to such an extent that the wonder is they don't agree ■ to most any thing that will start the wheels of commerce going again. After all it seems to be up to the operators and the miners Vincennes suffered a' terrible fire t Saturday evening, a number of people being trapped on the second floor of a department store when a furnace exploded and the fire shot, up the elevator so quickly that escape was cut off. One person met .death and seven were badly injured as a result. The numerous fires over the state the past few days should be sufficient z warning to cause every ouc to use the utmost, care io avoid similar disasters. There are many things that can be done. See that no rags or waste are about the premises, see that the Hues and chimneys are clean and safe, watch the scrap paper, inspect the wiring, be careful about fliiufij too hard. It is needless to

Charles Fairchild, a Huntington county farmer who was acquitted the other day on a charge of murder because it was plainly shown he was insane when he killed Andrew Stouse. was committed to the hospital for the criminal insane by Judge KeiiMT Saturday without further hearing. The court decided that the man was too dangerous to bo turned loose and ordered him committed to Michigan City where he will be held Indefinitely. The action seems proper and the simple manner in which the matter was handled by the court is deserving of commendation. Have you $204 in the saving department of your bank or banks? If you haven't that much for each member of your family, some one else has it for you and you have been neglecting your end of the thrift campaign now evidently iu progress in the United Slates. Reports just made public'show that‘the average savings for every man. woman and child in the United States, on deposit in the banks of this nation, give that average and also that the annual increase recently has been about fifteen dollars per capita. The besT showing is in the New England states and the poorest in the southern states. This is to be democratic week in Indianapolis and much depends on the action taken. The republican editors had their inning two weeks ago and adopted resolutions of one kind and another. This week the democratic editors have a two days session and it «t> expected that during the week, the candidates for Failed States senator will have been decided upon. It is the general belief that Evans Woolens, of Indianapolis will be unopposed for the short term but there are several leaders with an eye on the long term, including Lirifeeln Dixon. Albert Stump, L. Ert Slack and others. The editors will banquet Thursday night and hold their business session Friday at the Claypool. Th" second semester of the De- ♦ eatur Community Standard Training School will begin this evening at Central school and classes will be resumed under the tutorage of Rev. Thompson. Rev. Light, Rev. Fledderjohann, Rev. Cofert. Rev. Miller and C. I* Walters. It is expected that those who took the first half of the work will continue during this semester and new students are welcome to enter at this time, registering at seven o'clock this evening. The school is a splendid thing in every way and gives those desiring Io inform themselves on the various subjects such a* principles of teaching, young people's departments, training in worship tfud the work of the church, a wonderful opportunity. o Tipton — This town is divided into two groups of rabid partisians over the question of which of two men had the first spring chickens. EXCAVATIONS DISCLOSE ANCIENT SOLAR CULT Bengasi. Feb. s—(United Press) — The existence of a solar cult at Depth Magna is indicated by the latest excavations there. Several important works of sculpture ami statuary have recently 'lieeu brought to light, among which are some mutilated heads, dificult to identify. They belong apparently to an Asiatic Hellenic type, and are such as to suggest the existence of a small temple of the sun at Leptis Magna such as are known to have existed at Heliopolis and Rhodes.
