When you think of that cold day of eight years ago you can almost feel comfortable with a palm leaf fan in your hand. It was twenty-eight below, a stiff wind was blowing, the snow drifts made travel impossible, many trains were snowed in and all were hours late. There was great, suffering and business at a standstill. Decatur business men have forwarded petitions to Representative Vestal ami Senators Watson and Robinson urging them to get back of the bill to stop tlie sending of unordered merchandise by mail. That wonld be a good tiling Io do not only for the merchant, hut for the consumer for . I he is usually the one who pays the freight. The anthracite coal strike is to go 1 on. After weeks of negotiation the conference lias broken up and prices 1 of coal stocks on the New York ex- ' change and the prices of fuel genet- 1 ally have stiffened. We are in mid- 1 winter and it is absolutely necessary 1 that coal be obtained It begins to 1 look as though the hands-off policy of ! the government cannot go on much 1 longer. The democratic state convention ' will be held June 3rd, it was definitely ■ decided at a meeting of tile state 1 committee yesterday. The district will organize .May 14tli and the state 1 organization will be made on May ' 19th. The meeting at Indianapolis ; yesterday was an interesting one and * I much business was transacted, fol- ; lowing a general discussion of issues t and plans. «Maa»M»w—————— The church meetings are growing ■ in attendance and consequent interest, a good, showing for a good com- / I munity. Its a fine thing to let up ( for a couple of weeks and inventory ; our good and bud habits, thoughts and j Golden Rule tendencies, to consider just where we stand in this mad rush 1 of a rapid age end where we will "stack up" when the bugle blows. Its perhaps a pore important fortnight . than mlfflt of us h, ve estimated it. South Bend lias twenty-two cases . of smallpox and its the old-fashioned kind, much more severe than Ihe cases prevalent th l; pant few years through this section. Several people have died from the disease there and we warn authorities to be on the lookout that the closest quarantine may be fixed if the diseases reaches in this, direction. At South Bend an order requiring all school teachers and students to bo vaccinated unless they can show proof that proper precautions have already been taken. The saving tooiur farmers and to all our people, and the reduced wear and tear on motor cars and vehicles generaly through improved roads, is infinitely more than the cost of interest and maintenance on these roads. —By Charles M. Schwab. Not mor l; law, but law observance, is required to prevent most motor vehicle accidents. That it is supported by inquiries made into recent automobile tragedies tn Indianapolis. Todd Stoops, secretary-manager of the Hoosier Motor Club, suggests that it may be found advisable for that organization to consider the formation of a vigilance committee among motorists to help solve the problem of tlie law breaking driver. While there is good ground for objection to a wide authorization of police authority among persons who are not employed by the public for police work, there is such a thing as citizen cooperation witli constituted authority. In view of tlie large number of automobiles in use, and tlie impossibility of the police witnessing all infractions of the law, a united effort of some sort, to reduce the hazards caused by reckless and irresponsible motorists, is worthy of discussion. They can row gamble with fate on the chance that they may not be observed by anybody who will report them and be prepared to testify against them Many get bolder and bolder until their disregard of the law ends in an accident, witli fatalities or serious injuries.—lndianapolis News.
