Colleges Cnable To Stem Advance Os “Pro” Football By Edward ('. Derr, (U. P. Staff Correspondent) Chicano, Dec. I.—(United Press.)— Professional football baa become so strong that the colleges and univere it.es are powerless to check its ad rance, .according to Major John L Griffith, commissioner of Big Ten athletics. He predicted that the West* rn conference athletic directors in their annual meeting here Thursday. Friday and Saturday, •'will adopt no definite rules against pro football because there ig nothing that We can do to stop It." "We are opposed to professional football, of course,’’ Griffith told the United Press in an interview, "but we realize that our hands are tied. About all we can do is to discourage it among the college players. If we could adopt some rules or resolutions that would curb it. wed probably do it. but 1 cannot see how that would be possible." Another interesting topic that is almost certain to be discussed by the roaches and athletic directors is the matter of postponing when weather conditions are detrimental to good games. Due to an unusually rainy autumn, several of the Big Ten football games this year were played on fields that resembled barn yards after a three-day downpour and the ball, was so wet and slippery that the open style of play was virtually impossible. Several of the coaches expressed a desire to investigate the possibility of postponing games under such condit’ons. An obstacle that they will encounter, however, will be the fact that thousands of rooters frequently accompany a team on its important trips and a postponement would make it almost impossible for them to see the game if another trip were made necessary. Playing rules are not expected to receive much attention at this year's meeting as there has been general satisfaction with the rules as revised last year. Coaches and athletic directors from non-conference colleges have been invited to attend and some of them are expected to sign up Big Ten schools for intersectional games next season. A feature of this year's meeting will be the attendance of many high school coaches. An effort is to be made to discourage the recruiting of high school athletes to certain colleges before their prep school careers are ended. o Schaefer Loses First Block Chicago. Electric Basketball Timer Demonstrated Here I Representatives of the Woodwardl!eem*r comr-an*. of Huntington, makers of the Fairplay Electric Basketball timer, were in Decatur Monday. dem. onstrating an electric timer and endeavoring to interest lot al fun* toward the installation of one in the local (gymnasiums. The machine has a large dial divided into two twenty-minute sections, one ten-minute section for the intermission between halves, and one five minute section for an overtime period. A large minute hand, which is operated by a dock Inside I the machine, indicates at all limes during the game, the exact amount of II into played and the amount remain|ing to be played. At the end of the first half, end of the rest period and end of the second half and overtime period a bell rings automatically. The clock can be stopped when time is taken out during the game, by means of a switch operated at the time-keep er's table. A little red light indicates when the clock is running. The timer adds greatly to the inter-, est of the game. Whenever one team forges ahead and the playing is fast and furious, by glancing at the timer, the fans can quickly team how much
time remains. The same company is ' now engaged in making an electric score board, and it will be ready sor 1 use soon. The timers are not sold, hut are leased during the season. | —— o Hewitt New Army Captain West Point, N. Y..
