South Bend Seeking New Federal Building South Bend. Ind., Oct. 9. — Local business men. headed by federal Judge Thomas W. Slick, are backing a movement to obtain a new federal building for this city. The fact that the postoffice is crowded and that the press of Ebusiness in the federal court here will make larger quarters ' necessary in lie near future is the motive for the movement. In speaking of the. movement Judge Slick explained that the government seldom rents quarters for its office when it is cheaper to buUd. Oct. 9.—The Newcastle city council has joined the light being waged by a number of Indiana municipalities against the proposed rate increase being asked by the Indiana Bell Telephone company. One hundred dollars has been appropriated by the city for the purpose of employing lawyers to assist in the fight. o Marion Police Trying To Stop Petty Thievery Marion, Ind., Oct. !». Extra details of policemen have been drafted into service by the local department in its Efforts to combat a wave of petty thievery which has been iu progress here. The, police believe the robberies are the work of a gang of young boys.

SOIL SPECIAL HERE TUESDAY Many Adams County Farmers Interested In Train To Be In This City "More farmers are Interested tn the Soil Improvement Train to be run over the Erie Railroad, October 13 to 22, in co-operation with the Soils aud Crops Department of Purdue, than iu any project we have undertaken in a long time," said T. M. Palmer, Farm Products Agent of the Erie, today. Mr. Palmer believes that the farmers in Northern Indiana, who bring soils to the train for testing and who get first hand information on crop fertilization and rotations, and methods of liming, will profit greatly. Ho emphasized also that moving pictures, showing methods of soil building, would be shown at each stop, at 10 a. m. and 2 p. m. M. O. Pence aud K. E. Beeson, of the Soils and Crops Extension Department of Purdue, will lead the discussion of Soil Improvement and the value of liming, at each stop. Professor S. D. Connor, also of Purdue, will supervise the laboratory work of soil testing and will make liming and fertilizer recommendations. An exhibit of liming and fertilizer materials will be on display along with lime spreaders and a special feature will be pictures and charts showing the results from the use of lime ami fertilizer. More than ten carloads of limestone will be distributed free of charge to farmers co-operators during the IS stops. Mr. Palmer says, "Bring your soils to cur soil clinic and have your soil problems and difficulties properly diagnosed. Here, farmers will have the advise of competent soil doctors without any charge, whatsoever. The lotal county agent states the necessary ten agreements for the obtaining of limestone have already . been secured and that a number of other farmers have submitted their names as alternates. — a Health Board Turns Back $5,000 To General Fund Indianapolis, Ind., Oct. 9.--United Press) —More than $5,000 has been, turned back to the general fund by the state board of health it was an-
nouheed today at the quarterly meeting of tile board. This amount represents a saving in expenditures from the $170,000 appropriated for the yearly expense of the board. A total of $1,635.29 In fees also was turned Into the general fund. Dr. Victor Keene, in making the announcement, pointed out thut the $2,000 salary iucreaso asked by Dr. King, secretary of the board, other salary increases aud the addition of an expert laboratory chief could easily be met by the fees collected. The amount of fees collected this year was iu excess of $24,000.
