Han is Outguesses League On Pitchers Ry Henry u Farrell, (United Press Sports Editor) New York, Sept. 24.—(United Press) — When Babe Adams, the 43-year-old pitcher, came to New York on the first eastern trip last spring with the Pittsburgh Pirates, ho woa greeted warmly by friends among the New York newspapermen The Rabe is one of the finest and most popular characters In baseball. “Well, Babe, you’re back again,” one of the writers remarked. "How many more trips are you going to make?” ’■Listen," the Babe replied, “I’m just a youngster getting my start and trying to get along. When 1 get real old I’ll get a job with Washington." It was his way of putting a jest that became popular in baseball circles after Bucky Harris, the boy manager of the Washington Senators had pulled Venn Gregg back from the minors and had grabbed Stan Coveleskie and Dutch Reuther when they were headed for the bushes. Tris Speaker, the veteran manager of the Cleveland Indians, thought that Coveleskie, one of the few remaining spltballers, was through with major league baseball and he asked waivers on him. Every other manager in the majors but Harris respected the judgment of Speaker and passed him up. But Harris claimed him and got him for the waiver price. Wilbert Robinson, veteran manager ot the Brooklyn Robins, also asked waivers on Dutch Reuther, who was one of the aces on the pitching staff of the champion Rods in 1919. Reuther wasn't tagged when he was put on the block, but the word went around —as it had gone before —that

the Dutch was bard to handle and the other managers thought that if Robby, the gentlest man In baseball, couldn't handle Reuther, that'no one could. They nil passed him up but Bucky Harris and he went to Washington for the waiver price — one of tbn cheapest forms of transfer in baseball. Harris said—“ Reuther will pitch for me" and Reuther replied with — "I'll pitch for Harris. I was worked all last season with a sore arm because 1 was working on a contract that paid mo for the number ot games I won.” Smart baseball mon laughed at Harris and said that his boss, Clarke Griffith, was being cheap in picking up a lot of castoffs, but Bucky said —"I can’t afford to trust rookies. I want some pitchers who know batters and who don’t have to think what to do when there are men on bases.” • • • John McGraw, manager of the New York Giants and the sage of baseball, said recently that Harris bad been guilty of some great judgment when he picked up Coveleskie ami Reuther. He guessed wrong on Gregg, but two ' good guesses out of three are a good average for an* guesser. 1 The figures prove that Harris was > smarter than any of the other manI agers in the major leagues. Suppose the Giants, the Reds, the Tigers, the White Sox or even the ' Yankees had pk-ked up the two castI! offs? • I Heading into the last month of the ' I American League pennant race, Covey | had won eighteen games and lost II seven; Reuther had won seventeen : ‘ games and lost eight. : I Together they had won thirty-five
