CHICAGO POLICE CONDUCT RAIDS Booze, Gambling Devices And Prisoners Pour Into City Headquarters Chicago, Aug. 25 —Booze, gambling devices and prisoners poured in a steady stream into the headquarters of the police, sheriff and federal agents early today, as these three arms of local law enforcement reached into the outskirts of Chicago in the most extensive series of raids attempt, ed this year. No check-up of the amount pf booze or the number of prisoners taken can be made until raiding parties have reported to their respective headquarters. authorities said Five popular roadhouses on the north shore of Lake Michigan had been raided before midnight. Sheriff Hoffman said at least three squads of his deputies probably would not check in with their prisoners and booze until several hours after dawn. Simultaneously Mayor Dever demanded that the police department reverse its attitudo toward the sale of illicit liquor within the city proper. Replying to the mayor, Police Chief Collins announced that within two weeks Hie department would be “shaken up and shaken out ". Collins contemplates transfers of wholesale proportions in an attempt to stop policemen from protecting friendly saloons in their home districts

Brnging his auto to a halt. Reed and his companion were forced to leave the auto and one of the bandits grabbed the satchel containing the money. Reed said the bandit who took the cash was about 45 years old and wore a false beard. The other bandits appeared to bo between 35 and 40“ years old. The robb(?r| disarmed and the guard ami disabled the engine of their auto so they could not take up the pursuit. Confederates In Auto An auto containing two other members of the gang was waiting around a turn in the road near the scene of the holdup. At a signal from their confederates. the two men in the auto drove up and the five sped away northward in the direction of Danville. 111. Ref’d said he believe he would be able to identify the five bandits. The men were evidently familiar with the schedule of the messenger and the fact that he would carry the payroll mouey today.
