The Drake hotel is known as one ()f Chicago's largest and most exclus ive hostelries. It Is situated on a commanding site overlooking Lake Michigan and at prominent corner on Michigan avenue. Hundreds of guests, many of them millionaires and their families, from all parts of die world were about the lobbies and in their rooms when the roar of the pistols and shotguns broke loose. State's Attorney Robert E. Crgwe, who has assumed personal leadership of the prosecution of the captured bandits, said the holdup was without an equal in dating in all Chicago'* history. All of the bandits had been drinking heavily and one of them ad mitted his nerve while Intoxicated led him to go against his judgment. The holdup combined the elements of wild west daring and the cunning of Chicago’s gangsters. Ted “Tex" Court, the Cherokee Indian, and Joe Holmes, a cowboy from K-K ranch, near Sweetwater, Texas, came tc Chicago and planned the robbery with Woods. Eric Nelson and another ‘‘Bad man." Court was slain by a policeman’s bullet just as he was fleeing. He fell along the curbstone of Lake Shore drive, which borders the lake. Holmes was beaten Into insensii.il ity and captured in the hotel kitcher as he tried to escape. Only the f ict that his gun jammed prevented the wounding and possible killing of the two officers that trapped him.. Nelson was killed in the basement of a house seven miles away after e mad automobile cnase along Sheridan road and North Clark street, scores ol traffic policemen along the route com inandeering machines and joining in th. pursuit. Ito sharch for him. Rodkey was shot down by Court in the hotel offices. Witnesses said Rodkey offered no resistance and was shot simply because Court had been enraged by the fact a girl alammcd a door in his face. The swashbuckling bandits swaggered into the hotel from the north side, passed the Italian room which swarmed with fashionably gowned worfien taking afternoon tea, and turned into a spacious promenade—the Avenue of Palms. In a narrow passageway adjoining they found the wickets of the cashier and paymaster. While this was in progress, Court wts continuing his drunken maneuv ering with the office force, Ono ol the gills slammed a door in his face, shutting him off from the crew, and lie careened about drunkenly, tiring his revolver at the panels of the door Just then Miss Vera Blanchard, secre tary of John B. Drake, mounted the top of the stairs leading to the executive offices. Court had reached th. tame spot and reeled into her, waving his smoking pistol in the air. She sprawled backward down the stairs, picked herself up and ran into the lobby, shrieking for help. Court, groggy with wine, thrust his gun through the grating; "We're front Texas," he bellowed, “and everybody put up their hands." Adding half a doxen profane utirases to impress his victims, he ordered all seven of the occupants of the room into the controller's office which ad joins the uashier's cage. Marching them through room after room, the drunken Texas Indian fin illy herded them into the offices of John B. and Tracy C. Drake, owners •>( the hotel. He plucked the valu ihles off each one and paraded them back to the room yhere he had found them. Meanwhile. Nelson had entered the ‘cashier's cage and with the aid of two of his comrades, had forced Carl Anderson, cashier, to disgorge the. bills from the safe. These were stuffed into a black bag. Court then returned to the room where the clerks were cowering and thrust his gun into the rihs of Rod key. He pulled the trigger. Rodkey had not even moved, but the Cherokee was beyond all reason by this time. James McMurdie. house detective, summoned by the screams of Miss Blanchard, opened his doorand blazed way as Court, Nelson ami the two others went out. One bullet burst itself in Court's shoulder. One of the bandits fired back at him. Then four of the bandits fled down the mezzanine corridor and out onto the drive. Holmes had meantime taken flight down the back stairs to go out through the kitchen. I ft' forced several attaches out of bis way, but one rushed into the street and hailed two policeman. As he was struggling with two kitchen helpers the officers entered and took a flying leap at him. One of them brought butt of his gun down on Holmes’ head. He was nn

conscious for two hours afterward. Court, when be hit the open air, Bred his pistol at random. Two officers gave chase and closed in on him. Officer Hannigan drew his revolver and dropped the mad-man in his tracks. He died on his way to the hospital. Nelson and his two robber companions ran for the stolen automobile they had hidden down the street and roared off down the drive. Circling the hotel, they headed north through Lincoln Park, swerving and crashing past signal lights. Hundreds of cars were forced to lak to the curb as the handit car gathered speed. A mile and a half north they crashed into an automobile. Two of the men, one ot whom lai er proved to Im Woods, disappeared, and Nelson, with the bag containing part of the money, commandeered a taxicab containing a woman. Pressing his revolver to the driver’s neck, Nelson ordered the driver to continue north. At the same time he knocked the woman to the floor of the cab. Police had started pursuit at the Drake, and gathered forces as every crossing was passed. Policeman Charles Kiefer com mandeered a car and was one of the leaders .in the chase. Seven miles north of the hotel the taxi crashed into a street car. Nelson leaped out and ran into an apartment house basement. Kiefer followed and dropped Nelson with a bullet through the head. Hundreds of policemen and detectives hunted the city for “Con" Mellenback, 24. of New York, the fifth member of the bandit gang, known to Woods as Mellenchuck. Chief of Police Collins said he was confident the man is in hiding in the city, and a watch was placed on all railroad stations and automobile roads. Collins believes two others acted as lookouts for the five, and questioned the two prisoners in an effort to secure their identity. Hotel officials toeay estimated the loot al between $7,000 and SIO,OOO. Police have recovered part of U. Child Dies From Effects Os Fireworks He Ate Logansport Ind..
