July 9. - (United Press.)— Widespread discussion rent the city today following the expose that Filipino politicians heading the independence move are paying the hotel bills of a party of American congressmen who arrived here last week. Thirty-one statesmen and secretaries are in the group, which reached Manila aboard the army transport Chaumont. Most of them were in Honolulu during the naval maneuvers there. The expose resulted when a few members of the party refused to accept the offer of free lodging and disclosed the secret. Senate President Quezon deplored the revelations as "newspaper com ment in poor taste, tending to place the Americans in an embarrassing position.” The local press has entered into a heated discussion over the episode, the Filipino newspapers defending the visitors and the American publications ridiculing the affair. Washington, July 9. — (United Press.) — Eleven members of congress and their secretaries left here six weeks ago on a junket to far eastern wasters aboard the transport Chaumont. The party sailed from Guam July 2, arriving at Manila a day or two later. Most of them were congressmen from southern states. o FIXBLAMEFOR TROUBLE IN CHINA Two British And One American Blamed For Firing On Strikers London.
