Already reports of more than two dozen deaths over the conn try have stat tied many officials in the larger cities to lay down hard and fast rules. One practice that should be stopped and those who engage in it severely punished, is that of throw Ing crackers at passing automobiles. A slight jerk by the driver of the car might cause a serious wreck. Y’ou can have plenty of fun by using the greatest care in setting off tire works and the accident prevention bureau of Indiana has issued a list of don't which you are asked to remember:— Don't hold a fire cracker in your hand while setting it off. Don't use matches, use punk. Don't use carbide in a can. Don't use revolvers loaded with either blank or loaded cartridges. Don't hold sparklers in your hand, stick them in the ground. The sparks could put your eyes out. . * Don't permit small children to have fireworks or be too near where they are being set off. Each year some person who thinks these “don'ts" were printed for the other fellow is saddened when some accident happens to one of the chil dren. Be as careful as you can and help to prevent accidents, tires, more severe rides next year. Witnesses are testifying that stock in the Hawkins Mortgage Company : worth one-cent was sold for sfxty-five , dollars and a total of millions was I thus taken in and it must be true for 1 the evidence comes from directors, i attorneys and officers of the com- J pany. It must be embarressing to I them and to those foolish enough I to purchase this worthless paper ; and the only good we see as a re- 1 suit is that it may keep some others t from thus investing their life's earn- ? ings in similar companies. Don't buy i stocks unless you have thoroughly ’ investigated them. Its a mighty good < rule to depend on your banker or at , torney when considering such propo 1 sitions. The glib talk of the sales ( man is a poor thing to tie to when * buying stocks. Tomorrow is Auto Day in Decatur, monthly event, originated by the De- ! catur Advertising Association to attract trade to this busy little city. It has operated several years and Is successful because it brings the people together, makes it a day of reunion, establishes a friendlier feeling between customer and merchant, provides a good business in the retail stores, bargains for their customers and benefits which extend afl around the circle of country of which this is the center. The llvller the commun !ty, the better it is for every one and it takes effort to make a town move along. A nation-wide discussion is on now as to whether children should be spanked or not. following a statement made by a distinguished speaker before the New Jersey Medical Society. There is something more than pay ng due honors to Mrs. Porter In the movement to bring Elephant Rock here ami mark It with a tablet for her. It brings up a study of nature which Is always a good thing for us. for it gets us away from common things and back to tho biggest things in the world. The movement should grow and should be a revival of interest in those studios to which the famous authoress devoted so many years of her life. Mrs. Porter was successful largely because her writings made people forget petty things ind think of the great outdoors. Work on the bituminous highway between this city and the north line of Adams county began today and by November the road will be ready for use. It will he an improvement for it will dispose of the dust and provide i smooth, hard surfaced road which will from this time on be maintained by the state. The commission assures us that the road will be an excellent me and that they will see that it is. At any rate wo are to have our first unproved highway built by the state md we are grateful for it. . o ;

' Where is the greatnes ot the king At midnight when he’s slumbering? I His royal robes of pomp and pride.
