Careful preparations have been made to broadcast radio reports to the United States. These 20 meter messages cah be picked up by amateurs who have apparatus capable of handling such short wave lengths and ■will probably also be re-broadcasted on common wave lengths by big sta lions for all fans. But for emergency use, the expedition will take 24 highly trained long distance pigeons. The birds will be particularly relied upon for use in connection with the three navy airplanes which are to make the final dash to the pole. Though equipped with wireless, the navy wants planes to be protected in every way possible. If these small radio sets on the planes fail to reach the outer world the fliers will have carrier pigeons to carry their reports. The pigeons will be sent by express from the naval air station at Anocostia, near here, to Boston and will be met there by an experienced navy pigeon trainer who will explain to the fliers how many grains of corn to feed the birds daily and the proper temperature for their baths when they are at their base at Etah, Greenland. The 1.400 pounds of food for the birds consist of 700 pounds of Argentine corn, 300 pounds of Canada peas, 200 pounds of Kaffir corn and 200 pounds of pigeon grit, Among other articles to be supplied for the birds on the trip are 25 pounds of tobacco for tile birds to chew, bath tubs, drinking fountains, artificial nests, message books and instruction for starting the birds in the proper direction for the flight home. N. for seven years the pigeon trainer at Anacostia, has been training these pigeons for several months, preparing them for long flights ovr cold country They have themselves capable of flying over 50(1 miles a day, with unerring ability to find Anacostia. June 5-(United Press) - At the tap of the gavel opening the fifth annual convention of the Disabled American Veterans of the World War here on June 22, five World War Veterans will step reverently up to the tombs of the unknown soldiers in Arlington. London, Paris, Brussels and Rome and place wreaths upon their catafalques. The simultaneous ceremonies across the world have been arranged as an impressive inauguration of the convention which will work here for five days drafting and planning a legislative pro gram for submission to Congress next Minter, embodying the wishes of the war-torn wounded. The mutilated delegates will-stand silently in their convention hall at the appointed moment, their memories turned to the battlefields abroad where they suffered their wounds and where their unknown comrades so signally honored, fell. of the disabled men still in hospitals. The second day of the convention will be given over to the annual parade of the disabled, -led by National Commander Frank J. Irwin, of New York. The escort will be regular army and national guard troops and civic organizations of the city. There will be separate groups of the blind, amputation cases and medal of honor men. The delegates will march according to the fourteen division of the country from which they came. Among speakers M’ho will address the gathering are Brig. (?bn. Frank T. Hines, director of the veteran’s Bureau, and Gen. James A. Drain, commander of the American Legion. Drain is the first national leader of the larger veterans society to attend a convention of the disabled men. The legislative program contemplated by the organization is principally a reassertion of those planks of the programs adopted at the Minneapolis and Salt Lake conventions which have so far failed of action. Broadly speaking, they fall under the heads of rehabilitation of disabled veterans compensation, insurance and hospitalization.
