A SERIOUS MATTER; — There can certainly be no reason able excuse for the brutal neglect of Laudy A. Jackson, of this county, which terminated in hia death at East Haven asylum yesterday. Strapped into a bath tub with tire hot water turned on. the man in charge deliberately left to attend to other affairs and permitted Jackson to be scalded to death. Then the attendant was discharged and of course disappeared. Why lie was not placed under arrest for murder or manslaughter or at least for criminal negligence is beyond understanding and surely will result in a complete investigation of that institution. There have been more deaths of patients at East Haven from this county during the past few months, than for several years combined and this affair has deeply and rightfully incensed the citizens of Adams county as it should the people of every part of the state. We should demand a complete investigation and we should if neces sary provide funds to see that those in cliarge, if guilty of crime, be punished to tile limit of the law. that fTTe inefficient be discharged and the public informed yf methods used there. Nothing is more important than the care of those unfortunate citizens who because of illness must be cared for in public institutions and nothing, we believe, will more keenly arouse our people to action than criminal neglect of such patients. Surely it is time for an investigation and such a one as will convince the public that the very best care and kindest treatment possible will be , given those sent to East Haven. , f Adams county should and we feel sure will demand it and follow that demand with any action necessary to obtain results. .Make yourself ap active and real part of the community by joining the industrial Association and then assisting in every way you can. We are just at the point where we can go forward in i most, progressive way if we can have the united support of every citizen and property owner and Ihi. an,- . man here ajtd the co-oper-al on of ihe farmers of Adams county. • J* In every large city’ in the country mat ufaicturers because of the terrific overhead are planning to move to : ' taller citi ••. where they can have all of the advantages and escape most of the disadvantages. We appreciate that it is in some degree an annoyance to approach a crossing, stop the car and, if a view of the rails-be not clear for a considerable distance, get out to look. It may be even an irritation to stop and listen without taking the trouble to look. Nevertheless this is really the safer way. An express train running tit. 6b miles an hour will cover about ninety feet per second. Since some express train runs faster than that, the chances of a clearance are less. A train that will '"plunge tpc length of a standard city block in a period of three seconds makes the hazard of trying to “beat it” an extreme hazard,—Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette. ; It costs more money to have a car ;.of potatoes unloaded and delivered in I New York City than it does to cont vey that same car from Indiana or a 'Michigan to the terminal in that city.
