CODLING MOTH DANGER DELAYED Cool Weather Delays Activity Os Insect On Fruit Trees (By the County Agent) • ’wiiif to the continued cool weather er which prevailed for several days during and immediately following the coining moth spray, which, in most cases, was applied a week or ten days ago. the emergency of the codling moth has been delayed for several days, according to word received from the entomology department, at Purdue. Their observations show that the insect will not become active until about four weeks after the application of the first fruit spray and. accordingly, the next fruit sptay should be about three weeks later than the first, instead of two weeks as recommended in the spray bulletin. Those who have applied the fruit spray of ascenate of lead and linte sulphur should not expect that to he sufficient to guarantee clean apples, as the spray referred to above is almost as important as the first. This spray should he made of I>£ pounds arsenate of lead in each fifty gallons of spray. In addition, lime sulphur at the rate of 1% gallons of the liquid to fifty gallons of spray sinyOMl lip used. If lime sulphur in the dty form is used, 3% pounds in fifty gallons of spray is the proper amount.

he be taken to jail at once to await trial. o Fire Damages House At Berne Thursday Special to Daily Democrat Herne, May I.5—A fire which was quenched before it did serious damage. partly destroyed the interior of Homer Parrish's house located on Behring street yesterday forenoon. The fire was discovered by Mr. Parish before it had gained much headway, and he immediately called the fire department. However, when they arrived on the scene the upper story was enveloped in flames. They immediately played a stream of water on the blaze and soon had the fire under control. The upper story was badly damaged by the flames, and the contents of one room were all burned. The lower story was not damaged by the fire, but the water did considerable damage. , Work for Improvement of the Rural School A campaign to bring the problem of the smalt rural school prominently before the legislatures of 42 states is expected to effect definite improvement in rural school standards, according to an announcement by the United States bureau of education. Many new laws pertaining to schools are pending. Among these, educational leaders are laying particular stress upon the need for laws exacting higher qualifications for teachers' certificates and standardization of small one, two and three-teacher schools. Reports to the bureau of education Indicate that the supply of teachers Is now more nearly adequate to till the demand than for many years, and that the time Is opportune for more stringent regulation of teacher certification. “The emergency Is now over and disregard of professional standards is no longer necessary." it is declared by the bureau. High school enrollment has increased during the last ten years In an unprecedented manner.
