HORSEMEN BEGIN TRAINING STEEDS U t - ■" No Horses at Bellmont Park Yet, However; Several At Van Wirt The first wave of summer wv.ithcr has resurrected that yearly desire among racehorse owners, drivers and fans to see some action. Stables at most of the race tracks in northern Indiana and western Ohio have opened and horses have started their annual pre-season workout for the many races that will occur later in the summer. No horsemen, as yet. have opened training quarters at Bellmont Purk, but it Is expected that they will arrive in the next week or two and open their preseason quarters. Hermon track is regarded as one of the !>'»»’ tracks in northern Indiana, and <. season several race-horse owners gath-1 er here to whip their mounts into shape for the racing season. It is reported that more than 20 horses are in training at the track located near Van Wert, Ohio, and a like number have opened quarters at most of the northern Indiana tracks. I A string of six horses owned by J W. Allen' are creating considerable attention at the Van Wert track. His best entries are all trotters. Several prominent horsemen have their horse in training there. i The track here is in fairly pood shape and it is probable that it will remain in good condition un'ess heavy spring rains wash it out. The local barns at the track are in readiness and probabilities are that in the next few days horses will be limbering up around the Bellmont oval. I The race program, which was announced yesterday for the Northern I Indiana fair, will bring to this city ; many of the country's best horses. They should all be in first-class shape, and condition because of the leaness. of the fair this year, and it is prob- ’ able that local race fans will witness! Romeo f the fastest and highest class races ever seen here. o ‘Big’ Munn And ‘Strangler’ Lewis To Meet In Indiana Chicago, April 24 —(United Press) —Gabe Kauffman, manager of Wayne "Big" Munn, has signed articles fori a match with Ed "Strangler” Lewis at Floyd Fitzsimmons bowl at Michigan City, Ind., on Decoration Day. Lewis was guaranteed 60 per cent of a $30,000 purse. Munn gets 40 per cent. Had Munn not lost his title to Stanislaus Zbyszko last week he could have taken 60 per cent of a $60,000 guarantee. Billy Sandow. Lewis’ manager, agreed that the diamond studded championship belt would go to the winner. I
Do You Know ThatThirty out of every hundred Americans age f fty-five must depend on their children? And why? Not because of extrava- , rance, but for want of foresight. We all know it is a good policy to save money but we all wait to make the first deposit in a sizable amount. Just such delays result in the many fifty five year old dependents.
