Inbiting the use of open mufflers on automobiles came as the result ot arrests made by a state policeman. The two men eon v icted were arrested outside the limits of Indianapolis. Formerly the law permitted motorists to make all the noise in the world if they were in the rural districts, but the new law, now effective, protects the nerves of the country dwellers as well as those of the urban citizens. The muffler miiaam e is not confined to the country by any means. Practically every day and particularly every night the roar ot the exhaust can be beard in Indianapolis. Boys equip flivvers with racing bodies and tear about the streets, imagining they are. driving race cars at the speedway, and making as much noise as if they were on the track. Trucks are operated with tho muffler open. Motorcycle policemen often go roaring by, muffler open and the air filled with the noise of pursuit when there is no pursuit. The law against opctuiuufflers in cities and towns has been in effect for years, but only rarely is it enforced. The, state police have shown that it can be enforced. and they hive been instructed to arrest all violators, regardless -of the nature of the offense. that'the law Is being enforced in the ktpsntry, where It is new, there ' teems no reason why it should not I ra ■ 11 be jpnforced m the city, where it is old.. HOW HAPPY THE LIFE OF A BIRD MUST BE A little bird sat high in a tree She '.seemed as happy as should could be She hopped and chirped and danced in glee How pleasant Ibc life of a bird must be. She built a Dpst so nice and neat And she curried straws in her little feet She worked and chirped the whole day long Hut yet she sung that same sweet song. High up in the top of the old oak tree She laid the eggs, one, two, three And she hopped and chirped and danced in glee How happy the life of a bird must be. The eggs were speckled us they could be r The tiniest egg syou ever did see No harm will come to them so wee Eor they’re clear in the top of the old oak tree. And now the wind rocks all day long Three tiny birds birdti so safe from harm And soon'they will chirp and dance in glee How pleasant the life of a bird must be. —Mrs. Mary M. Boyd.
