LEADERS BEAT CATHOLIC HIGH High School Boys Lead First Half But Weaken And Lose 28-17 In the final basketball game of tin--11)24-25 season in Decatur, played al tin- I Igh school gym last night, the Decatur Leaders downed the Catholic high Hehool quintet by a score of 28 to 17. Coach Confer’s team, which sprung a big suiprise by winning fburth place in the national Catholic tournament at Chicago re cently, carried the tight to their older opponents during the first half and when the rest period rolled around, they held a 11 to I<> advantage. Sensational work by "Mongo” Meyers had kept the Catholic hoys out in front They held a lead of 11-4 at one time in the period and then Oliver and .Mendenhall started scoring for the leaders, closing up the gap in the score. Moyers dropped in three field goals in the first half. The Leaders tied th" score at 11all soon after the second half opened and then took the lead which they hi Id throughout the remainder of the game. Meyers was watched closely in the second half and got loose for only one field goal. Captain Had Vogh'wede left the game during the second half, with four personals charged against him. Wdmhoff took his place. Coach Conter also substituted Schulte for Holthouse and Art Voglewede for Gass. Schulte’ dropped in a pretty field goal while he was in the game. Andrews, who had been shut out in the first half, broke away for three field goals in the second frame and Oliver continued his scoring, chalking up three more field goals in the second half. Last night’s game was not only the last game of tne season, but the final game in which five of the CAtholic high players will appear in the lineup for D. C. 11. S. Captain Voglewede, Christen. Holtliouse. Schulte and Laurent will be graduated ties spring. The Catholic high team exhibited some clever guarding in the first half, keeping the Lenders away from the basket and forcing them to shoot long shots most of the time, but in the second half the Leaders penetrated the defense more readily . First round games were completed late yesterday and winners of the preliminary tussles were pitted against each other in the evening play. Wichita and Westport high of Kansas City are picked as strong contenders for the championship following easy victories in their opening games yesterday. In the evening round. Yankton, S. D.. defeated Fairfax, Okla., and Uniontown. Pa., won front Teachers College high of Greeley, Col. Elgin, 111., fell before Dupont Manual of Louisville, Ky„ 26 to 14. Torrington, Conn., and Uraiiia. La., meet in the first game today. — — Lafayette, Ind. — Purdue lost to Wabash college here in the second game of the college baseball season. The score was 6-0.

It is the first year the Wheeler school has had a basketball coach.
