Governor Jackson called the highway commission members into his back room yesterday afternoon and it was expected that the fur would liy. instead, however, it seems to have been a sensible session just to talk over tho program for the year and to urge that work be continued. There is much for the highway commission to do and surely the thing • for the governor is not to harass them but to aid them and he seems to have awakened to that fact, now . that the legislature is over and the l ipper bill defeated. The people don't care near so much about, the politics of it. or who holds the job as they do about, getting their highways improved since they must pay three cents on every gallon of gas, for that pur post . Better get busy and keel ,busy. v Democrats haven’t had many smiles the past few years and so no one will blame them for grinning over tin Warren affair in the senate. It was a victory for the minority who oppos cd the appointment of Warren be cause of his past connections witl the sugar trust. The biggest joke about llie whole affair however is that when Dawes, the nationally advertised ''man of action,” had his first chance to act, h<- was sitting onhis neck in the New Willard Hotel smoking his pipe and his act became a race against time in which he lost by a few hairs. He will have to lean that its important to sit on the lid around the old senate when Seuatoi Walsh has his weather eye out for game. And now if you want to become r lawyer in Indiana you will have t< lake an exam before the state su preme court. Just how that bil slipped through and how it meets the reqiiirments of a state constitution ha: not yet been made public. Fot many years members of the pro session have been trying to raise tin standard of requirements and we have voted on a constitutional amend motif. Now it seems without any noise or publicity a bill has passer the legislature which changes tin system. The wonder is that it wasn't doin’ sooner if there was away and who figured this easy way of accom plishing it. With one petition for a county road on til’ with the commissioners and at lea t two others being prepared if begins to look as though we would have to meet this very important pr ibt'-m and solve it to the best ad vantage of every one concerned. It •oc without much comment that the I- I way to do this is to take care of all parts of the county as nearly as pe slide. The only proper way to do it is io work out a road program which will take care of the county in a fair, just and equitable manner and al the smallest cost. Then com plaints will be few and far between. SPRING AND THE NORTH WINO The wind came out of the north' north-east. And blew a terrific gale; And pretty Miss Spring,- she was thinly clad,— Cried as her lips grew palo, “North wind you are cold and cruel, go back! You drive all my children away My birdies are wanting to sing and swing, My lambs want to run and to play. .My buds arc eager to open their doors. My froggies, down by the pool. Are trying to kick their mud-covcrs off And get ready for singing school. | My robins and bluebirds and larks 1 arc here, They were singing a while ago; And uty crocuses stirring and wakening up,-North-wind wont you. please, not blow?” Rut North wind minded her not one bit. He blew 'till his checks were red So Spring kissed her children, dropping a tear. And tucked them all into bed. But whispered. "Just wait for a few more days. I'm going to call Mr. Sun. Aud South-wind too,-- they're both my friends They'll put North-wind on the run. —A. D.
