Foreion Representative Carperter & Company, 12$ Michigan Avenne, Chicago, Some one has amended the portion of the appropriation bill providing for funds for the highway commission and regulating them for the next two years so that they will not be allowed to proceed with the addition of the 900 miles which included the road from Huntington to this city and east. We believe this would lie going a little too far and we hope Mr Gottschalk will use his influence to prevent such action as we believe he will. This county is entitled to an east and west highway. Editor Adams of the Vincennes Commercial is pushing a good roads campaign because he declares the mail situation is becoming serious. Many trains are being discarded by tin- railroads eaclt year because they are not prc(fitable and newspapers and business concerns will have to depend upon other means of delivering their mail, parcels and papers. He is right. The road problem is by far tile biggest economic situation ami it must be handled just right if wo get any where. There are Only eleven days left it this mouth and we are hoping that during that time every mail subscrib er Io I lie Daily Democrat will renew for the year 1925. A farmer told us today that he had m idea net profit of SI,OW from five milk cows tiie i>ast year. Wliat we don't know about farming would more than till the library but it just occurs to us that if we were engaged in the business we would sure find out. about the profits of dairying and the sale of butterfat. The local creamery is one of the best concerns in Ad tins county for every one. They need more cream to meet the demands for their high class butter. Every farmer should help them and in so doing help themselves. Humors drifting in from tiie south and v.i I indicate that economic eon ditions are any thing but rosy. W< had been fearful of some such new.so we are not surprised. Didn't about ciery body vote to "keep cool'.'" We ittsst there will be no healthy good times until the farmer has a year or two of profit and sotitc of the wind is taken out of the fake prices on products when there is nothing to s< 11. No news story in recent years lias created so much interesl as this case and the state of Kentucky spent thousands of dollars in efforts to reach the unfortunate prisoner. They at least have the knowledge that they tried their best. We are glad Senator Saunders has changed his bill providing that funds may be diverted -from the city plant fund with which to build a community center. We have not thought enough about it Io say that we want it at this time, but wo might in the( future, and if we decide to build one, it would be fine to do it without all special tax. Decatur has a very good city bull and at this lime it would seem more advisable to use any extra funds we have in gucll away as to reduce taxes but on the other Land every city needs a community louse and it is needless to say they mean many benefits and pleasures. It’s worth thinking about and its tine to have the law so we can rto it if we want to.. In Bluffton they will vole on the question in the May primary. ——-ss*= Charles W. Murphy, managing secretary of t!i<' chamber of commerce al Bloomington writes us that the •ilatcment made in our paper of January 27th, that there was no waler in (lie new reservoir is wrong, that "We do have water and that it came without rain.” That’s fine, but we had the idea from press dispatches out from there and from what v.'C Imre heard from students that there was a shortage there and would be until after a-wet. season and for that rsason the university took an I early vacation. We are glad If by »

! any means the troubles and difficul- | tics and near disaster to the city of I Bloomington have been taken care of nd we sincerely hope permanently so. B • Road building is not new. Mfcjc than two thousand year's ago the Apian Way, elevated two ' feet and called a “high way,” was constructed by the Romans. Since then you can tell the tage by reading of road improvements. When the people were happily progressing roads were improved and when they were slipping back, roads became poor because of neglect. When the Indians controlled this nation they used the streams and paths, but as the white man began building it, he improved road conditions. We are now in the greatest road age ever known. Its a big problem of course but its mighty important. If those old Romans could build marble highways and maintain them, guess we can.
