The state debt Is now $3.4(W.9f)U. , besides the permanent debt of s3th - (100 owing to Purdtre University. In order to pay this it is proposed to turn the revenue from the luherilance tax into the general fund, more lhan $1,109,060 per year, or the equlv-| alent of a tw o cent tax levy. If the state can be' run on other revenues the Inheritance tax will pay the * plate debt in something over three years. The republicans In congress and the United States senate, drunk with, power and approaching power as (be result of the reccut election are pun ishing LaFollcttC and other independent republicans by placing them last , on committee assignments. They will be sorry about the next election for it is such petty politics that causes the people of the United States to swing and when they do the punch usually lands squarely on (he jaw. The garnishee bill which has been in every legislature for a half century has bobbed up again and will be passed by the Senate. Its fate will rest with the House where it is doubtful it is survives the onslaught of labor organizations and big manufacturers who say they will be made collection agents. Ohio, Michigan : aud Illinois, adjoining states, all have amh laws. The present bill provides that ten per cent of a man's wages may be held back for any debt he owes, notice being given to the employer, after trial in court. A few weeks ago its was .vunounced that Mr. and Mr t'olcmau of Indianapolis. had donated $250,000 for a lying in hospital to be a part of the state Robert Long Hospital in lud • l anapolis. I | For several years various churches -Th the city have conducted Bible i schools during the summer. Now under supervision of members of the Ministerial Association we are to have a Community Vacation Bible school. Flans are underway to pro1 vide proper teachers, meeting places, details of one kind and another including finances and it is believed the school will prove a wonderful help to the young people. Children between the ages of six and fourteen will be welcomed as students and the result is*certain to be uplifting and helpful to the children and consequently to this community. Its a line . work and an effort, which deserves the co operation and assistance of i ■ those who want to go forward rather I than backward. After all the only way to solve the various serious problems of today is to get back to simple i living, the Bible, the church and the i teachings of llmsc agencies. The way Io do that effectively is to start will, tin- children and that’s what i ' bring done. ■ There are n <, tilings about the proposed county unit measure but the grave danger we sec <; the further inclination towards that centralization of control which has eventually ruined every nation since time begun and which it was I hoped under Hie constitution of the L'niti'd States would be avoided for many centuries auy way. Come. xv-t •'WHITE CARGO” COMING TO MAJESTIC THEATER THIS WEEK Press and public proclaim "White Cargo,” one of the most powerful dramas of our time, written by Leon Gordon, and produced by Messrs. Cort • and Klawans in conjunction with I Earl Carroll. It has the enviable record of two years in New York, one in 1 Loudon, ami one In Chicago. It comes to the Majestic theater, Fort Wayne, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with matinees on Saturday and Sunday. ' Its story of love is unique, being jthauof a ‘white’"man's infatuation for a native 'dusky' woman. The scenes arc laid in that land, where I few ‘whites’ survive the low moral code of the inhabitants or their native customs, on the West coast ot Africa. The production is very picturesque with brilliant lighting esI facts. Patrons should secure their I reservations as soon as possible.
