Next Sunday To Be Golden Rule Sunday December 7, 1524. ha* been design at cd as Golden Rule Sunday, the day on which al) American families are urged to eat only a simple dinner and to direct their minds and hearts toward the needy thousands of children in the Near Fast orphanages, it contemplates nothing less than a new Near East and a new era of love and forgiveness and unselfish service. The menu ns suggested by the committee in charge consists of soun. potatoes, bread and cocoa. There are now forty thousand boys and girls in the various orphanages maintained by the Near East Relief, while more than one hundred thousand are quartered in refuge camps or are living with friends and families in whie heither one or both, parents are dead. Alexandropol. in Russian Armenia, has been called the largest children’s city in the world, for it harbors fifteen thousand childreik who are being cared for In one of the Near East Relief orphanages. Heroic work had already been done for these deserving boys and gils, but unless additional relief is secured, large numbers of them must perish during the coming winter for there are still in the Soviet Armenian cities and villages thousands of these waifs who have neither food nor clothing. The first work done by these orphanages is, of course, to feed the children, many of whom are actually found in starving condition, and to restore them to health through medical care, play .and exercise. Rut when j they are once more strong and fully I recovered from their exposure and hardship, they are sent to school and given training in various crafts and trades in order to fit them to earn their own living and to go out and help others. The girls learn to make new garments as well as to make their old clothes, they learn to weave rugs, to embroider, and to make different articles of handicraft that are later offered for sale through the Near East industries. The boys do blacksmithing, shoemaking, carpentering. tin-smithing, tailoring and ' farming, as well as make pottery. These thousands of children In the Near East today constitute a latent force that if rightly directed will prove mightier than all the armies of the past.
