Elkhart Claims 11. S. Grid Championship Elkhart. Qec. I.—Turing back the Bicknell teain, that traveled from Knox county to dispute the Indiana high school title with the Elkhart eleven on a snowy field here Saturday. the local team won 28 to 6. Elkhart, as a result of its victory, claims the unofficial Indiana title. The team was undefeated, and its goal line was crossed but twice, once by Mishawaka and once by Bluknell. Its season’s total was four hundred fourteen to thirteen and nine ts/ <, it played. Captain McCrary, Bicknell, made his team’s only points when he crossed the line after the ball had been carried nearly the length of the field by a teammate as the result of an intercepted pass. Three of Elkhart’s touchdowns were made by Quarterback Brannan. | Captain Peterson made one touchdown and drop kicked a field goal for Elkhart. Four thousand fans saw the game. The players were greatly handicapp-l ed by the slippery field, from which three inches of snow had been dear ed before the game. o Caging Stars At I. U. Preparing For Season ■ Bloomington. Ind.. Dec. I—With the | Wabash game only a little more than a week off. Coach Everett Dean and his Indiana I’niversity basketball team plan to get down to serious practice. Daily scrimmages this week will give the net mentor a better idea of the ability of his varsity squad, especially of the five men who joined the varsity at the close of the football season. Although it is too early yet to predict any possible lineup for the first game. Alward and Easton are the two most likely looking backguards rs the squad, with the former captain having a slight edge. Fast competi- ' ion at floor guard prevents any hoice of a first string player, since mong those competing are such players as Ijorber. Sopnsler. Beckner, Johnson, and Nicholson. Captain Barker is having a hard time keeping his old position at center. Sibley. Bordner, Benzel, and Moyer are pushing him. Krueger and Ixtgan are the two outstandings forwards, with Ricketts. Harrison, and Druckamiller a.-, relief men. Tobin and Nessell. sophomores who were on the football squad, are unknown quantities as forwards and may push Krueger to file bench in another week. . Director Clevenger has not completed the schedule of preliminary games. Kentucky State, at Lexington. Dec. 18. and Mercer, champions of the South, at Bloomington Jan. fi have been signed. Other possible opponents of the Indiana five are DePauw. J’tnler. Franklin, Rose Poly, Grinnell, .Votre Dame, and Ohio Wesleyan. o Basketball Coaches To Meet In Fort Wayne Bloomington, Ind.. Dec. Y., Dec. 1. —The action of the victorious Army team in pulling off helmets and standing with bowed heads immediately after defeating their ancient rivals from Annapolis, was explained by Ed Garbisch in his valadictory as football captain. "We have prayed before every game this season, not for victory, but that we might acquit ourselves like men. At the conclusion of * Saturday’s game, when 1 think our ‘ prayers were answered, we jerked off our helmets and thanked God fervently for the victory." —o z — Field Goals 1 By Mark M.
