15.6 oil 00 THE true relationship which gasoline cost bears to the other expenses, incident to the operation of an automobile, is interesting and surprising. It has been computed by Oil and Gas Journal that, on the average, the motorist of the United States pays S9CK).OO for a air. The same authority states that taking into account all the fixed items of annual expense incident to the operation of an automobile - including depreciation, interest on investment, insurance, liccnres and taxes — gasoline costs only of the total. Other authorities bring this expense down to as low as 10% of the total. While garoline is a major factor in the operation of a car, the expense, when compared to the whvlc, is of r linor importance. We believe that this is due in large measure to the advanced work pf the Standard Oil Company (Indiar .) who, by increasing the yield of gasoline from the crude oil available, lu.;> kept the price of this Droduct within the reach of all. Without the processes originated and developed by this Company, the price of gasoline would be much higher than it is at present. Without the distribution system maintained today by the petroleum industry,' initiated and expanded by this Company, touring would be impractical. It is due in large measure to the init iat ive, skill and rcboun of the Standard (hl Company (Indiana), that motoring has bcm taken out of the sphere of the “richman’s sport” and that it has been made possible for the man of modest means to take bis family and get our into the fresh air nnd sunshine. It is the inspiration of such achievements that spurs the 27,(XX1 men and worpen of the Standard Oil Company (Indiana) on to greater accomplishments, which will add to the pleasure of living for the thirty million people of the Middle West Standard OH Company {lndiana) General Offlcei Standard Oil Building 910 So. ready to begin balloting today, managers of Governor Alfred E. Smith were claiming their candidate would become the party’s candidate on the tenth ballot. A total of 225 votes, w th a possibility of 270‘A will be shown for the governor on the first ballot, they claim, and this strength will be steadily increased as the voting continues. On thi' tenth ballot, according to managers, the governor will receive the necessary two-thirds vote to make him the party's standard bearer. McAdoo Headquarters. Vanderbilt. I Hotel. “New York. June 30—McAdoo leaders decided .'n a series of conferences lasting until early today to attempt a coup of the democratic convention for their candidate before another session adjourned: Their plans call for his nomination' i between the eighth and tenth ballot. Group loaders informed the Californian that his certain maximum strength would be conservatively estimated at 553 votes. On the first ballot he will get 428, according to their checkup. On the third ballot a i break toward rim will be manifest jand by the fifth ballot he will have p'cked up 125 votes, they say. In view of this lineup, the leaders agreed that if McAdoo is to be put I over he must be put over tonight and they arc prepared, according to their I present agreement, to attempt to hold I the convention in session until at least 10 ballots have been taken. Madison Square Garden. New York. June 30—The democratic convention ' today adopted the followng resolution In memory of the late Pres dent Harding: ‘ In iMilitical campaigns, the Amer lean people are divided into opposing parties; after the election they are as one man in allegiance to the government and n loyalty to the nut on’s 'chief executive. As democrats we stand uncovered beside the grave of Warren G.
