PRESBYTERIANS AWAIT REPORTS Routine Matters Occupy Attention At General Assembly Today /United Press Service* Grund Rapids. Mich., May 34 —(Special to Daily Democrat)—Routine matters occupied the attention of delegates to the 136th general assemIMy of the Presbyterian church of I the United States of America in conI Vention here today. I With the decks cleared of all the 1 important things that have come up thus far. the delegates settled back to await the report of the committee on bills and overtures. When this committee reports the fundamentalMta and modernists will probably engage in a spirited controversy on some of the doctrinal matters sure to be thrown on the floor of the assembly. The fundamentalists, holding the upper hand as result of the election of Dr. Clarence E MaeArtnev as moderator and with all of the Important committee chairmanships in Jhcjr hands, are confient of controlling the assembly. William Jennings Bryan, one of the leaders of the fundamentalist group, has b<-en chosen as vice moderator, by the newly elected moderator. Unity of the north and south branches of the Presbyterian church was discussed Friday by seeral speakers. The speakers are unanimous in declaring they believed the time near when the two organizations would merge. A request that the assembly take a flrm stand against war and pledge ( the Presbyter au church to work for an international agreement by the Chicago Presbytery was circulated stuoug the (onimisskmers and delc- , gates.
