thing to attain unusual prominence often include the statement that the subjuet of the work "had no fear of publie opinion.” This is meant to be praise of the highest kind and usually is so regarded by the reader. It implies that the person had convictions of his own and was courageous enough to act on them. It is a fact, however, that there is a great deal of prejudice and stubbornness to be found in the natures of some very able men. Such as they have gone up the ladder not because of their characteristics, but in spite of them. The truly great person is not temped to put his eur to the ground or to be tossed about by every trivial breeze of impulsive clamoring.
