Standardization Os Road Signs Grows Important Indianapolis, April 25 —Standarization of danger, warning and information signs on the nations highways is becoming more ami more important each year, dm 1 to the greater interstate traffic. It is very confusing to the average traveler to be confronted set of signs in each county and State through which he travels. The Mississippi Valley Association of State Highway Department recognizing the extreme necessity of standardizing these signs, appointed a committee of five members, one from each five states, After many heated debates over what to adopt in the way of a uniform system of signs the committee finally made a report to association at its meeting in Chicago. January, 1923. With this report as a basis several of the States have worked out the details of a system of signs to comply, in general, with the report. As ’the study of a standard system of signs progressed and details were studied some additions and modifications have been made from this report. The'work which led up to the report and the study that has been written probably constitute the most exhaustive study of the standardization of highway signs for country roads that has ever been made. Members of the committee sacri-

ficed many of their personal opin- [ ions and prejudices on the subject in order to come to an agreement on a uniform system. Wisconsin, .Minnesota, Indiana and Michigan are now erecting signs on their whole state system largely in harmony with this report. All highway signs should be placed in a relatively low position with reference to the surface of the road, the committee agreed. In spite of this, it is noted, most individuals almost invariably, at first, put them so high that they are not liable to be seen by the travelers at night. An important feature of this uniform system of signs is the use of different shaped signs to indicate different degrees and kinds of danger. For instance, it will be noted that the round sign is to indicate railroad crossings. This design has been adopted heretofore by law in a number of States.
