YESTERDAY AND TOMORROW • THINGS ARE HIGH YOUNG AMERICA YOUR BAD BOY MOVIES IN CHURCH Arthur Brassbone Do you know that hings are higher in Berne than in any other town or city in Adams county? Yes higher, bus net necessarily more expensive. Here’s the explanation. The elevation in feet above tide of the principal railway stations in the county are u follows: Berne, 849 feet above the tide. Ceylon, 848 feet above the tide. Curryville, 842 feet above the tide. Geneva. 840 feet above tide. Monroe. 822 feet above tide. Peterson. 817 feet aboveaide. Preble, 813 feet above tide. Decatur, 800 feet above tide. Pleasant Mills. 799 feet above tide. Monmouth. 788 feet above tide. The above table is taken from the state Geological survey. Take a look and see how you stand in comparison with your friends from other quarters. Perhaps some of them haven’t higher ideals, yet some are living on a t higher plane. Hartford City has a unique way of acquainting Young America with local government and its relations to community life. An election will be held in all the schools of the city on April 23 for the purpose of naming boys who arc to assume the positions of the city officials on the afternoon of May 1. This will be done in connecton with the observance of Boys' Week. The writer sees no reason why we cannot go Hartford City "one better." Why not hold an election here in Adams county for the purpose of choosing boys and girls as party nominees In the ’ Primary" then later hold the •general" election. This, at first thought, will seem absurd but not so in the final analysis. It would seem quite an honor to Young American to hotel such positions n« auditor, clerk, rncorder, sheriff. Judge, etc. This would create much enthusiasm and rivalry and if rightly conducted, would make local government really mean something to the young citizen* ot our county. We have too much unintel ligent voting and it's dangerous to democracy. A chain is no stronger than its weakest link, but we must begin with the young citizens. Any step toward securing a more Intelli

' gent vote and any step toward securing popular interest in national and community problems would be a step .oward upright and clean elections into the school curriculum would prove an asset to the future America. What makes bad boys? My atiswer is bad homes. It Is a good yule to remember thut as the twig is bent so t will grow. Fathers, do you find time to associate with your boys? Do you take your boy into you confidence and make him feel thut you are hi< partner? Do you make him understand that you are Ills best bosom friend? And above all. are you leading a life that you tan hold before aim as an example of what he thinks -o be his ideal? Do you take him with you and chum with him? If you cannot answer these questions in the affirmative, do not blame the boy if some day he should step on youg heart aifd disgrace the family. Remember , that bad homes make 99 bad boys out . of every hundred and if a good boy 1 comes from a had home, which Ujj sometimes the case, he comes in spite , of the fact and not because of it? G x When Benjamin Franklin introduc- ' ed the first street lights in Boston ; | there immediately went up a howl of i protest from the church leaders of J that place. They printed ‘and circulated thirty reasons why street light- 1 Ing should never be "tolerated.” This was their strongest point: "When' night comes, God wants the streets* to I - dark ami if we light it w - ' setting oursehes again the will of God." How tunes do change! — Consider the motion picture machine. if the motion pi lure machine had been brought into the church ten years ago It would have been eonsidered nothing short ot sacrilege Even today many rlmere ami honest men consider it an act of impiety while others who are equally as h<»n est and sincere claim that motion pictures provide an unexcelled method of teaching in the Sandaks' hool.
