The greatest enemy today is not capito] or labor, not the corporations nor the captains of industries, the leaders of this or that, hut the popu-larity-hunting, vote-getting, demagogue, orators, editors, public men of every kind who proclaim false doctrines for selfish purposes and foster class hatred. That’s the greatest dan ger in this country and to our notion, selfishness is the greatest sin in the world It includes about everything else called sin. The meeting of the republican editors last week anil the denioeratiic editors this attracts more thnn the usual attention for the reason that the newspapers are becoming more influential than ever before. At these sessions now hile of course politics plays some part, much time is devoted to business and shop, social events and other interesting parts of the pro grams. The meetings are open to the public and if you find time to drop In Wednesday or Thursday of this week at the Claypool you will enjoy yourself and meet the bunch. It’s funny how much pleasure most of UH get from the fact that We save several dollars on our automobile license fees and yet that means, of course, that the state highway < ont mission will be able to do just that much less. Many believe that we do not get a return Tor ou 1 dollars and that may be true in Adams county for naturally roads are being built where they arc needed most and do you remember what Earl Crawford told ns — that If we want hard surface roads and main enough effort, wo will gm ihcm. for they only want to do whnt the people want? Th# campaign for renewal of subHcriptlons to the- Daily Democrat will, continue about three weeks, at the end of which time we will cheek up the list and mark off those- who havenot paid. We hope we don’t have to fake off one and indications now are that w t - won’t. More than two-thirda of our big family have renewed and the others arc- toming right along. We arc giving a valuable- hVersharp pencil tn those who favor us by renewing tn advance. Do it thia week and help •h get a good start for the year. help make this the best year we ever had. It's a popular thing these days to talk about politics as though it was some mysterious, sinister thing which only genius can master or fools rush in to. The truth is that through poli tics only is our government hatched and you can only have influence with your government as you have interest in politics. It may not be the best government possible but it's our system and the way to improve it is for you folks who think it can be done, to get in the game. .More than half the women entitled to a vote did not cast a ballot last year and only about twothirds the men. That's not a very, good condition. Politics is a great! game, fascinating, educational, won't; hurt you if you don't sacrafice too; much. .Most who are in it are not far clnatod for the money or the power or : the fame, tint because it’s a great old game, flat in and help. Throughout the nation the week be- j ginning last Friday is given to observance of the fourteenth anniversary ofthe Boy Scouts, it was February 8., 1910, that the institution of that remarkable organization was effected, and the anniversary week deserve:all the note which will Im- taken of it and more.
