BIG FIRE LOSS HEREIN 1923 Beavers & Fryback Fire Sends Total Upward; Loss Is $22,851 Iteeatur's fire loss during the year 1923 was several times as great as the I loss in 1922. according to the report iof Amos Fisher, fire chief, which was I made today. The total loss during | the year just ended was 823.x51.09 I while the loss during the preceding ' year was only 81.305. The disastrous fire at the Heavers • a Fryback furniture store last fall 'whhh also causer! great damage at the White Stag Cigar fa* tory just i south of the furniture store, was th* greatest contributing factor in the large increase in the total loss for th* kgoar. The accomplishments speak for them selves and sumned up briefly are: Improvement of city light and I power plant out of. the earnings of business and increasing capacity 100 per cent. Improvements as follows: Installing of two *OO H. I*, boilers, automatic stokers nnd other equip--1 ment. Erection of new brick stack, 150 feet high by 8 feet In diameter. Erection of two 800 ton coal silos and coal conveyor with capacity of delivery 30 tons per hour. Building *ox*o ft- addition to plant. Eliminating much of the smoke nuisance. Budget for 192* reduced about 810.000. and tax rate for next year reduced 11 cents on the hundred dollars, new rate being 76 cents. Installing of 59 oranmental light posts on Second. Line. Madison Adams and Line streets, adding greatly to beaiHy of city. Reducing city's lebt 85,500.06 by refunding that much of the city's bonded indebtness. McCulloch, of Indianapolis, today announced his candidacy for the democratic nomination for governor on a platform advocating “old fashioned economy," the abolition or conlolidation of useless boar*ls and commissions. a reduction In the cost of highway briilding retrenchment of expenditures for the new reformatory at Pendleton, and a co-operative marketing law. in his annoumeiiient.
