[HAPPY NEW YEAR:— Old 1033 is passing and the birth of a new year, 1024 is at hand. Its an important occasion if we make it so, not just a time to eat, drink and be merry but one when every individual and every community should sot up a higher standard and strive to meet it. The past year has been an eventful one, with its joys and sorrows, its progress ami its failures but on the average we have all advanced. Business conditions are better now than a year ago and while not just what we would have them, are suck an improvement as to create a confidence in the future. What will Decatur do the coming jour. We should secure two or three j | good industries uud there is a splendid chance to do this. Several locall institution.-) are planning to increase! their produetivi ness and will build ( I additions. We hope to have withini a short time several important an-; r.ouneements which will assure aj busy year, lu the meantime there; are the road projects, the beautify-! ing of the city, the improvement of, sties is, the adding of ornamental j light posts and u hundred things we tan do. The condition of the farmer while' by CO me-ns w hat it should be is better wo Ix lieve than a year ago and there Is a chance for some improve-j taenia during the year. While we do not believe the farmer will come back! as lie should until u foreign market is established and that this can only be done by this cation assisting forcl< n countries, local conditions will largely help the farmer during the yew and make It possible for him to work at a profit. All in all the outlook is good and with our feet on the ground and our hands busy, there is no round* why tb« coming year should not be a hapi'.v aril a (troupe? rutin one. l.» Ih all (mil togHhur for the coin nmn cause of making this a better

county in which to live. We wish you one and all a happy, prosperous, glorious Now Year. We call your attention to the page advertisement in tills issue, announcing the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Daily Democrat. We are proud of our growth and prouder still of the splendid and loyal support given us continuously by the people of Ad-, ams county. Wo are inspired to make greater efforts the coming year to provide for you an interesting newspaper, one that will bo welcomed and anxiously watched for in every home in the county. Your interests are ours and we want to light for you i:i the near future as we have in the paot and harder. A community Is judged by its newspaper and we ary anxious to keep up with you. We hope every subscriber renews and that a thousand new ones join our r.imily of readers. Read the announcement and plan to help us make this county in the world. Judge Oure of the superior court at South Bern! has held the law which
increases autonßihilo licenses from 50% to 200% is unconstitutional. The ease now goes to the supreme court and if affirmed will mean the old; license fees will stand instead of thej increased rates. Several hundred j thousand car owners over the state, burdened with other overhead mile hope for that result. Os course there j must Ik- money with which to build I uud maintain the roads, but the highway commission by •‘hogging” all the ] money and returning none to the counties, loses much of its argument. If a portion, say one-lialf of the funds • ..- *! by the license and the gas tax i wore returned to the counties, it I would improve conditions In every ■ ! way and would reduce the terrific 1 l • xpeiise of operating, we believe. I A few good resolutions for the New ( | Year will help you anil the cotnmun- '• ity. We are not cranks. In fact we 1 * i j feel we are rather liberal in our be- | iiefs and our opinions but we do fee! j that the way to get things done is to ■ j divide to do them and then try as < j Lard 8s we can. Therefore resolve ' * -end strive us loiqf as you can. SHSBe-*H*SHBS*» I The sate season is at hand and ( j those who win* to buy merchandise j ) will do well to follow the announce- i aunts of the merchants in this paper.l It will save you money, benefit the merchant and is in .all ways a good ] tiling for you to do. , - The w. ulte r man may have missed the exact hour for the arrival of the ' winter weather but there is evidence 1 * t< day that he will make good before , the New Year is very old. > I WHY I FOLLOW JESUS , Because, His way, for me, Is life’s most pleasant path; Bordered with flowers of love And free from weed* of wrath. Strait way of pureness, truth. By heaven's laws well fenced; Its pilgrims with His Joy Daily are recompensed. Safe way of comradship,— Who walks close by His side. The tempter can not hurt, — No evil can betide. Good way that leads my feet Through fields of service fair; Built as He specified, Kept by His love and care. Highway of holincifs. By saints and prophets trod; Whose hearts belonged to heaven, Whose mind was fixed on God. True way, that joins at last, with pure gold; Where love shall live forever And no one will grow old. . —A. Field Goals by “Eagle Eye” Pele A—- — the preliminary activities out of the way now, basketball teams are preparing to plunge into the real part of their schedule. (Vfter reading the following paragraph in the Bnffton New*, wo felt quite sure that Bluffton must have won the game from Herne high last Friday night: “Staging a performance of unusual merit, the Black and Crimson players of the Bluffton high school '‘overwhelmingly’ 'swamped' Berne high's basketball quintet by the ’one-sided’ score of ‘4O-9’ In ti game that was featured by a commendable display of niachlne-llke team work on the part of Bluffton, ut the local gymnasium last evening.” Out of Bound says: "Judging front the score here last evening, the entire Berne team must have ‘sold out’ to lllutftnn. We don't Imagine It would take much real Jack to buy a team at that." Ross Hurd, Huntington columnist deluxe, tells how the H. H. S. team "ran away” from North Manchester high last Friday night, winning 21-18. If Huntington ran away from North Manchester in that game, then some of these teams over the state must use a flivver plane in getting away from their opponents. It looks like Comb Howard's Yellow Jackets were going to have a tough time downing the alumni tomorrow night. The old grads will have "Fat” Myer*. "I.ank” Linn. "Smoke” Peterson. Linn Kern. “Skeet" Kern, and others to send in against the Varsity. The leaders go to Hartford City to meet the Athletics tomorrow night. The Hartford City team downed the Bluffton Phi Delts in their first game of the season last week. The Leaders will have a hard game.
