""|f~ The thrills of Christmas may be over but the glad spirit of the occasion when good will reigns will continue indefinitely. ' ———— David Lawrence, a famous newspaper correspondent is authority for the guess that congress will do no*i ing worth mentioning until next midsummer when a desperate effort will be necessary to show the voters that they are in session. And New Years comes next, the time for good. resolutions. Wish some one woud publicly resolute to lead the community to a greater Decatur du: ing 1924. It can be done and if a thousand of us will so determine we can go a long ways toward making this a better and a happier place in which to live. A thousand leading democrats of Indiana have been invited to attend a meeting to be held at Indianapolis January 4th, preliminary to the big campaign of next year. It is expected that a number of aspirants for state office will formally announce at that time and that the event will be the real opener of the campaign year. We live in the greatest country in the world and we have the greatest peope. This was again shown yesterday when the congregation at St. Mary’s church donated f1t.53f1.t0 for charity. The money goes to the orphan homes at laifayette and Fort Wayne and that sum in excess of last year in the state, will be sent to help the starving and needy women and children of Germany. Among the good things we hope th<‘ New Year will hold for us Is the hard surface road north and south and a start on the east ami wept high way. Please remember that all good things Mo not Just happen It usually requires a little effort on our |>art and' Jnst now the most important thing is to tecum right of ways which will make it easier for the commissioners at ludiana|K>lts to act

If we will stir things gip a little here, forget the selfish part of it and really co-operate, we can get roads which-will put us on the map for gll time to come and its about the most important work we can do. The Christmas spirit prevailed here ami we doubt if there was a child within ihe corporate limits of the city who did not receive a visit from Santa Claus. If there was we assure you it was au oversight only. The (’rood Fellow club did excellent work as did several other organizations und many individuals. the exercises around the municipal Christmas tree were beautiful and delighted many ami the services in the various churches brought thrills to many children and grown-ups. There were tin’ usual family reunions and a hundred happy events which go with the glad season. It was tine and dandy. Even a sprinkling of snow came to make it more real. The world is slipping morally. In the Dearborn Independent, under the headline. “No Honest Yeggs Any More." Charles D. Brown, head of the protective department of the Minnesota Bankers’ Association, laments that the yeggmen all over the country are going fiooey on their ethics. Time was, says Mr. Brown, when a yegg's word was as good as his bond; and between hint (Mr Brown 1. as a bank protector, and the inmebers of the bank busters' union, where he had a wide acquaintance, there existeii a gentlemen's agreement. The yeggmen could be depend ed on to let be ihe banks represented by Mr. Brown. All that was necessary was to identify the institution by hanging on It in some conspidous place a sign reading "This belongs to the protected chain of banks; please do not molest.” and this would put the bandit on his honor. But now the gentlemen’s agreement amounts to nothing. It seems a harsh thing to say. but the veggmen of today will lie as well as rob a bank. It is not alone in yegg circles that this degeneracy can be detected Highwaymen. HlFrobbemi and holdup men of ail kinds bid fair I to bring their profession into diare pute Obviously there is something! defective in our educational system, and the post-graduate and night courses as conducted through the agency of the movies should be looked into Not that there has been any lack of schooling. Shooting up. holding up and making effete citl sens "stick ’em up" have been illustrated with variations. The result, in some respects, has been all that could be expected. Gun play movies are primarily written for the purpose of exploiting noMe traits, but somehow, according to the testimony of Detective Brown, they have failed to put it over along with the general efficiency that Kaa been handed on to our gun totem. —..p - i. WHY I BELIEVE IN JESUS Because I believe the Bible. Its record for me is true. On this my faith rests firm,— As walls on foundations do. Because of his wonderful words,— Only a God like mind. Could have conceived those truths That, in his teaching 1 find. Because of his wonderful works. He ruled both land and sea; Conquered each human foe And life’s last enemy. Because of the voice that spake Out of the heavens: “Believe!” And because those heavens opened My risen Lord to receive. Because we need a Christ, Just such as Jesus was: Who incarmates heaven for earth And earth to high heaven draws. Conceived by the Holy Spirit Bom of a virgin, pure; His works, his life and He, Beyond all times endure. —A. D.
